But are we ending up with a better HC?

And if so, this is a major home run hire, especially considering the circumstances.

That 2019 season was lit.

We went 16-2 in conference play.

TBD.

McMahon has exceeded all reasonable expectations with respect to building next year's roster. But now he has to perform with it.

In Wade's first season he took a last place program mired in apathy and picked to finish last once more and led them to a winning season and at least in the conversation (though not a strong conversation) for a NCAAT bid. The next year he won the SEC with LSU's best conference performance in nearly 40 years, earning LSU its highest seed in the NCAAT in nearly 40 years. From then on, his program never missed the NCAAT except when it was canceled in 2020 (LSU would have made it). That was the most consistent period of winning LSU experienced in 3 decades. Given the history of LSU basketball, that is a tough act to follow.

ON PAPER McMahon looks like he has a roster than could be in the NCAA Tournament discussion (LSU will likely be picked in the preseason to finish 8th in the SEC). Let's see what he can do

Will wade will always be the one who got away.

It’s going to be so bad when Clemson or Bama goes and gets him.

I loved WW too, but in hindsight he was never going to deliver a Natty for us.

Imagine the odds of being inadvertently surveilled by the FBI. He has to be thinking he's the unluckiest person on the planet

I'm starting to think we may have ended up in the hot crazy ex and the one you wife up scenario. I don't think I'll ever ride and love another LSU basketball coach the way I did Wade, but he had his problems. He never got a full roster together like he wanted at times, but I don't think he got the most out of his talent every year either. In fact his best coaching jobs were the first couple years. And we could still get in trouble from his transgressions.

McMahon has done a hell of a job and is way less controversial, the jury is still out if he's the one but he's done an A+ job so far. I can certainly see him bringing a lot of stability and success to LSU for 10+ years. I can already tell I wouldn't go to war for him like I would've Wade though. God I miss that crazy SOB

I will always love Will Wade for bringing back some passion, swagger and emotion to LSU basketball. It was also fun seeing him trigger people so bad. But, he had his shortcomings as a coach. If McMahon is able recruit this well on short notice and with penalties clouding the program, his upside looks to be pretty damn good. I like where we're at now.

Completely agree. People seem to forget that WW is not even 40 yet. His "shortcomings" were no different than any other coach at that age. The upside is he was winning at a very high level while learning. Could have been at LSU for 20+ years and I think we would have won a title during that stretch. I don't care if he was controversial or not liked in coaching circles because he didn't adhere to the "etiquette" of how to compensate players. The holier than thou attitude of some about him is an absolute joke.

That being said, McMahon has been a good hire so far. Time will tell if it was a step up, step back or about the same.

Will Wade was not a good in game coach and that was not changing. He was a great recruiter and organizer but his team was always going to run into a better coached team at the end of the year. I think he had a ceiling. Hopefully the next coach doesn’t.

And I like what I've seen so far from our new coach but WAAAAAAYYYYY to early for hyperbole like this.

He'll get my full support to help in any way I can though I can assure you.

Wade never cut down a net with his players and won one tournament game.

McMahon will have no trouble being better than that.
