1995: 7-4-1
1996: 10-2 (T-1 SECW)
1997: 9-3 (T-1 SECW)
1998: 4-7
1999: 2-8
2000: 8-4
2001: 10-3 (SEC Champions)
2002: 8-5
2003: 13-1 (National Champions)
2004: 9-3
2005: 11-2 (SECW Champions)
2006: 11-2
2007: 12-2 (National Champions)

It's simply amazing to me how much credit Nick Saban gets for, essentially, not having Lou Tepper on his defensive staff. If the administration had allowed DiNardo to keep Carl Reese, DiNardo never gets fired, Saban never gets hired, and we don't have to wait until 2003 for our first NC.

Wow. Saban didn't just build LSU, he built the ENTIRE CONFERENCE!!!
He kinda did. Before him, Lsu and most schools in the Sec weren't willing to spend shite for money on coaches. Saban started winning and we shelled out millions for the first time in our history. I truly believe this started a snowball effect

If we are going to play this game why don't we play with real facts? If LSU had hired Spurrier instead of Archer where would the program be today?

Saban's original contract was $6 Million for 5 years with an escalator for winning a NC in 2003. SEC spending has grown because the CFB industry has grown. One man doesn't dictate economics.

Each time a school bumps up the salary of one of its elite coaches, it creates a ripple effect in the coaching ranks inside and beyond the university. Compensation for coaches in other sports also goes up, followed by pay for athletic directors, administrators and conference executives.

This is a good article from the time Saban was hired which paints a good description of the CFB arms' race. In 2005, Spurrier was the highest-paid coach at $2 Million/yr.

quote:

If Saban is fired, he will receive up to $2 million in severance pay. But if he jumps to the NFL or takes another college job, Saban will owe LSU nothing. Emmert, a public-policy expert, decided against including a buyout clause when he negotiated Saban's $6 million contract - even though Saban left Michigan State with its football team headed to a major bowl game. "There didn't seem to be any advantage in forcing a person to stay in a position he didn't want to stay in," Emmert said. "I felt as though Nick was making a commitment to us, and I was taking him at his word."

Still a national contender. It would depend on CLM's assistants he hired. TBH, I think the entire landscape of CFB would've changed. No Jimbo Fisher at LSU, would' mean he might not be at FSU. No Saban to LSU, so he never becomes the hot coaching commodity and may never end up at Bama. Miles would've probably left for Michigan by now, and we would have some other random coach that may or may not be good.

Probably still watching all of the in state recruits playing for Florida teams. CLM would have been fired in 3-4 years. He would probably be an o-line coach somewhere

Les gets penalized because he took over a successful program. Most new coaches have to rebuild.

Louisiana hs football was incredible in the late 90s and early 2000s and most were still coming to LSU any ways, who's to say LSU wouldn't of had the same amount of success or even more so. It's truly impossible to know.. But Saban became an idea of this master recruiter from that and now when he went to bama the legacy enriched. It just took a good coach with the takent here to put it all together and LSU can have success with Saban, Miles, and any other competent coach right now.. But people are so afraid they will go back to the date of yesterday.. LSU will have success even with another coach. Unlike Florida who people love to bring up LSU does not have an in large in state school to compete with.

If anything Miles has recruited outside the state more impressively than Saban did here. Saban has the best recruiting game overall but Miles has been far more impressive here putting up major Texas and Florida pipelines.

To say only Saban would have had success and not Miles is pathetic. There's potential here to have more success than either coach.

Saban gave the roadmap for how to win at LSU.

I don't think Miles is a turnaround specialist. Sorry

I don't know what would have happened and neither does anyone else. Similarly, if Saban hadn't left for the NFL, there's no guarantee he would have had as much success as Miles has had here since.

It's on a Real and Spectacular Decline without an identified SEC Championship caliber QB on the roster.

BH may or may not be that QB. It's a 50/50 shot. He may be the next Jamesis or the next Perriloux. There are no guarantees on potential.

LSU could very well be in another hellish QB situation until 2016 (Patterson arrival) and all the Sunshine spewing in the world will not change that.

In addition, the real LSU Fan Base will have zero tolerance in 2015 if the Offense/QB situation is not drastically improved. They'll get up and walk away in record numbers if the dysfunctional 1950's Offense/QB scenario shows up again without any back plan by Miles. (JUCO QB)
