I have always had difficulty distinguishing the places of New Orleans from the people who inhabited them, and the people from the memories I have attached to them

After Katrina I seriously thought about buying the house my grandfather built. He and his brother built it after WWII with their own hands in the new part of town now known as Gentilly. When my grandfather retired to the Mississippi coast in the late 80s the house was sold. During Katrina it took on about 10 feet of water. The owner at the time abandoned the house. I didn't go inside but I'm sure that after Katrina and years of neglect it was unsalvageable. It was eventually torn down.

But what I realized when I was considering buying it back was that I didn't really want the house. I wanted my grandparents back and living in the house, exactly as it was when I was a child, and the years we shared together. Even if I'd bought the house none of it would have been the same and I just have to cherish the memories I still have.

About thirty years ago my in-laws purchased two leather couches from Hurwitz Mintz and recruited me to rent a U-Haul and deliver both couches to their home in Acadiana. It was an adventure. While at the store I picked out a desk to use at home, that I still have. I had to go back for that.

Adler’s - descendants running stores couldn’t have been a more unlikeable group.
Myron Goldberg- total douchebag.

Miss these much more…
Terry and Juden’s
Skeffington’s(?) on St Charles. Quick Tux and tails if you lost, ripped up or got wrong jacket after a hard night during deb season. You boy there always wanted to measure you inseam.
What was men’s clothing store on Joseph a block from Langenstein’s? I still have a pair of Alden’s I got there in the 80’s..
Gentry’s.

Thankfully Perlis is still rocking.

There are tons of business articles out there talking about family businesses and inheritance. In a nutshell it goes like this.

Gen 1 - opens business. Works themselves to the grave building the business.

Gen 2 - Starts working at the business as a child at the very bottom. Works their way all the way up, loves the business as much as Gen 1 and ends up running the business well.

Gen 3 - sent off to college by their parents to prep to take the business over. Has a blast at college, comes home and steps straight into an executive position. Takes over business and either:

A. Makes major changes learned in Business School and drives business into ruin.
B. Is an absentee owner and lets business coast in the hands of a hired manager.
C. Sells business at first opportunity.

Gen 4 - Stats show some really small number of businesses make it this far. It’s less than 5% and almost none make it beyond the 4 generation. The ones that do are under control of some sort of Board or Trust that keeps the owner from selling it.

My family had several pieces of furniture from Hurwitz-Mintz, but also some from Mintz and Mintz. I guess the latter was the predecessor? Or was there another part of the Mintz family in the same business?

Most of the old line Russian-Jewish New Orleans powerhouse stores have closed over the last thirty years. Adlers, DH Homes, Godchaux’s, Katz & Bestoff (K&B), Krauss, Latter & Blum, Langensteins, Maison Blanche, Gus Mayer, Kreegers, Hausmann Jewelry, others like Oreck vacuums moved out after Katrina

I was talking about Casamento’s…

This Hurwitz-Mintz sounds like the V Watts of New Orleans.

My wife once had a panic attack in the maze that functioned as its showroom.

Sorry to hear this. Reminds me of Kornmeyer’s in Baton Rouge going out of business after over a hundred years. Sad when these community institutions leave us.

I blame it on Jewlane parents. If they won't buy overpriced furniture for their trust fund babies, who will?

First time going there we wanted a specific hutch that looked a certain way in a certain size. Salesman was not understanding of what we wanted, so he just started leading us walking fast through every room until something caught our eye. It took like 10 minutes to get through it all, and we just walked through in haste and never stopped. I got a headache.

Did not find anything we wanted.

I bought an amazing bedroom set from HW that served me well during my bachelorhood in New Orleans.

Adler’s closing hurt a great deal…canal street is basically unwalkable now.

Moon Landrieu really accelerated our decline as a city.

I read earlier that casamentos may close after this winter, their daughter died last year and there’s no one left to take it over

They are going to work til April\May then make a decision if they are going to keep going. CJ doesn't wanna sell the place so if they "close" they will just use it as an event spot and still cook for parties and what not.
