How was Perkins utilized so well versus Arkansas in 2022?

And why can’t we tap into that again?

As an edge/ spy on Hornsby.

He can’t play a whole season in that spot though. He’d be a liability in the run game.

Would not mind him as a pass rushing specialist

He’s a liability in the run game now!

So we moved him to a position where he’d have more responsibility vs the run. How does that make sense?

because teams realized the way to neutralize him and not allow him to free release and chase down qbs or runners is to go right at him. Both running and passing.

Teams adjust. A&M adjusted and completely neutralized him the last game.

It was also said he basically used one move rushing the passer and teams were ready for that after watching film.

Maybe? But see above on the one move thing and, I think he wants to be a linebacker - and from what I heard he maybe used that as leverage in hinting at a tranfer this past offseason.

If we play a dual threat QB who is a terror running the ball but not very good in the pocket, then the strategy is to spy with Perkins, and he will destroy that. That was Arkansas in 2022.

Because that was his breakout game. Before this he had not made a huge game long splash so Arky wasn't prepared for him.

This is the perplexing part IMO. Even on obvious passing downs he is not going after the QB. I saw him slide into the slot on one 3d down and WTH is, mildly, all I could say. I get he does not have ideal size to play DE/edge on every play. On certain down/distances it seem his effectiveness AND the DEF as a whole would benefit from him going upfield from an edge creating disruption & accountability which will benefit Swinson, S. Jones, Womack and others coming from the other side or inside.

We took a fast, athletic pass rusher that was point & fire, to now on occasion rushing and generally from the ILB position where he is getting caught up in traffic with little to no impact. Let's get it right and press ahead.

He had 1 job. Spy the speedy QB they had at the time. He did it well.

He would be a bigger liability as a pass rusher. He's not big or strong enough to do that consistently. If he can't get around the tackle, he's out of the play.

He's a weakside LB/Safety hybrid. He needs to play star.

People romanticize his 2021 pass rush ability, He had 4 sacks rushing off the edge. and half of those were vs a shite arkansas team.

Maybe he's just not the player the media makes him out to be?

He had a game where he was insane. They made him an All American for that.

Saints just had a guy who got 3 sacks in Sunday's game; he will remain a cornerback.

Some Perk freshman highlights above. A couple things jump out:

1) he's an edge rusher or spy in 95% of these. That's seemingly his best role (as we've all pointed out for the past year+ lol)

2) he made plays against more than just Arky and Bama (though those are where he made his name)

3) there's better/ more complementary talent around him IMO. Ojulari stands out in the video, and you also have JRoy, Baskerville, Wingo, and Gaye in the front 7. And there's Greg Brooks, JBC, Jay Ward and Garner as the DBs.

Not some all time great LSU defense, but still a talented and experienced group that a wildcard type Perk fit in with better than what's around him now.

Playing stack backer against the run and playing the edge against the run are two wildly different things and you know this. You just love to bash coaching at every turn.
