Collegiate refs had NO idea how to officiate Shaq....people would literally grab his arms as he jumped to rebound/score...this team had immense talent...could not believe we started out the season with an early loss to Villanova...very hard for this much talent to gel....I still have the Fan Day poster signed by this whole team/coaching staff....I laminated it to preserve it the next day....top 5 most talented group all time....5 to 8 four star or better recruits from all over the country

As much as I love Shaq, CJ was fricking awesome. If he had stayed for his JR or possibly SR season, LSU was a good bet to win a title.

Dale Brown deserves to be worshiped for the success he brought to LSU.

Agreed. The guy had the PMAC packed and loud. We were a national program and could get 80,000+ into the dome for regular season games. We should have won a NC but we made two final fours and didnt miss the postseason for 15 straight straight seasons. 10 straight NCAA tourneys. Cant ask for much more than that.

But that team had more talent than any other college basketball team in history. I would be a ton of money that that team never is equaled in talent.
You'd lose.
The 1982 Heels had Jordan, Worthy, AND Sam Perkins. And I'd argue the 1984 team was more talented though less successful... lose Worthy but gain Kenny Smith and Brad Daugherty. There were some loaded teams back then.
No I wouldn't! Most talented team ever. If we had a coach that could have simply tried to attack with both the big men at once and teach the big men how to kick the ball out when 3 people are guarding them we would have won the NC and every game that season by 20!

2 Final Fours, 2 more Elite Eights, another Sweet 16, consistent 20+ win seasons and as you said, 15 straight postseason appearances. And all the while, he spent a good amount of time searching for Sasquatch.

You still lose. That team could have developed into one of the best, but they were too young. Those of us who watched that team get that.

Maurice Williamson and Vernel Singleton are probably the least remembered of that group, but both we kick arse. Best team ever assembled no doubt.
10 Maurice Williamson G 6-0 172 So. HS New Haven, Conn. (Cross HS)
13 Dennis Tracey G 6-0 177 Jr. 2L New Orleans, La. (de la Salle HS)
21 Lenear Burns F 6-7 215 Fr. HS Angie, La. (Varnado HS)
24 Vernel Singleton F 6-7 212 So. 1L Natchez, Miss. (S. Natchez HS)
32 Harold Boudreaux F 6-9 238 So. HS Arnaudville, La. (Cecilia HS)
33 Shaquille O'Neal C 7-1 286 Fr. HS San Antonio, Texas (Cole HS)
34 Randy Devall G 6-4 192 Jr. 1L Baton Rouge, La. (Lee HS/Garden City CC)
35 Chris Jackson G 6-1 168 So. 2L Gulfport, Miss. (Gulfport HS)
41 Richard Krajewski C 6-9 215 Jr. 1L Grafton, N.D. (Grafton HS)
43 Geert Hammink C 7-0 243 So. 1L Didam, Netherlands )
44 Wayne Sims F 6-7 247 Jr. 2L DeRidder, La. (DeRidder HS)
53 Stanley Roberts C 7-0 288 So. 1L Hopkins, S.C. (Lower Richland HS)
The 3 that i highlighted would be the players you wouldn't think of on that roster.
Another poster referred about Arkansas, look at the guards that we had.
There was no outstanding PG once CJ left. We didn't have a PG to help out against Todd Day and Mayberry from Arkansas.
We would play them tough, but never had the edge with our guards.
SEC basketball was very strong and would put 2 teams in the final four a few times during this decasde.

I guess I'm mainly in awe of the players we had at this school at one point. Just miss it.

the blame on Brown for not winning a lot more with this team,
There ya go.
Plus the Hack-a-Shaq game plan for EVERY SEC team that LSU played. And the fact that the officials at the time hardly ever called them on it.

Message Posted by sicboy I was referring to the Dale Brown worship. But you can be mad.
Dude. Were you around back then or are you simply spouting noise? There was one word for those days.......fun. Sure beats the suckage we have now.

Best times that I've ever had in the Deaf Dome. Great memories. Brown was an AWESOME motivator and recruiter...not so much an X's and O's guy, though.

Geert Hammink
Didn't realize he was a seven footer.

Those days were awesome but that team was frustrating as hell to watch...
If Shaq didn't dunk he would miss 75% of the 5ft shots he'd take...if he got fouled he would miss 70% of the FFs...
Meanwhile Chris Jackson would be expected to continually feed Shaq down low and watch him fail time after time and then dale would let CJ do his thing with 2 minutes left and LSU down by nine... CJ would score 15 in two minutes and we'd squeak out a win or a close loss...

The Hack-a-Shaq strategy worked, that's how.
Other teams did it, and rather than try a way to counter it, Dale Brown spent all his time complaining to the media about it.

Dale Brown no doubt gets a lot of the blame for them not going further in the tourney, and shockingly there were other teams with really good lineups that year as well, like Georgia Tech, who knocked us out in the 2nd round of the NCAA: I don't have the full lineup, but Dennis Scott, Melvin Oliver and Kenny Anderson were their main guys and they were pretty fricking good. Shaq was also on 17 years old most of that year and the college game was not center dominated like the NBA.
Yes we should have gone further, elite 8 or final 4 even but you might also want to take a gander at the roster of the team that did win the title that year, they considered one of the best ever.
