In my opinion, Dale Brown got too emotionally invested in trying to protect and cater to Shaq, and the wheels started coming off the basketball program as soon as that happened. He went from being a champion of the underdog to a champion of the star athlete.

To me, the pinnacle of that season was the LSU/G-Town game. Truly legendary,

So legendary in fact, you have the wrong season

Sat, Jan 28, 1989 Georgetown Big East W 82 80

[link=([https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/louisiana-state/1989-schedule.html)]1988-89 Season[/link]

In 89-90 we played Notre Dame in the dome, plus Texas in Houston, UNLV and LMU

He got Shaq too late. When they put in the 3 point line in 86 or 87, the college game changed. It was dominated by outside shooters, like for example Ga Tech's Lethal Weapon 3. It was no longer like the early 80's with the big man as the focal point like it was with G'Town and Houston.

You do have a good point about Brown's putting more on the star at that point.

Talk about bringing up past anger. Trent Johnson maybe a failure but he nor anyone else will ever match this level of fail. Dale Brown will stand alone on that podium for ever.

No I wouldn't! Most talented team ever. If we had a coach that could have simply tried to attack with both the big men at once and teach the big men how to kick the ball out when 3 people are guarding them we would have won the NC and every game that season by 20!

wow, I see the idiots are out in full force tonight.

Yeah, going to the NCAA Tourney and losing a close game to a final 4 team is a much bigger failure than 1 and done in the NIT

The 1982 Heels had Jordan, Worthy, AND Sam Perkins. And I'd argue the 1984 team was more talented though less successful... lose Worthy but gain Kenny Smith and Brad Daugherty

96 UK had what 7 first rounders?

The 89-90 UNLV team was not bad, 92 Duke of course, hell the fab five was pretty good.

were you alive then. Three future NBA All Stars were on that team, 3. Bob Night put it best: Give me one of those players on a team and I will win a national championship. Your the idiot that is in full force.

For some reason I dont think you were alive then. Theres 1 all star on that team and he was 17. One who I believe got caught up in drugs and blew all his money and one whos biggest press in the NBA was turning his back on the flag.

Who cares what the players did once they got there. They were NBA all stars. Glad you found it important to correct my spelling of a mans name. get a life.

Wait so they were NBA all stars except that they werent?

Nevermind the fact that the team that beat us had just as many players go in the top 5 and just as many NBA first rounders on the team. Nevermind the fact that the team that won the tourney had 3 first rounders THAT YEAR (just as many as we did overall on that team). Nope Dale Brown sucks as a coach because we didnt win it all when shaq was 17.

Bringing up this team and bitching about how they didnt win it all is so fricking old. Sure they were a good, young team, but MANY teams more talented have not won it all. Just look at this years UNC team (projected to have 3 1st rounders), last years UK team.....
Its an obvious lame attempt at DB bashing. Geez, the guy hasnt coached in how long now? Get the frick over it. He has his issues but he was great for LSU basketball.

Wow, that is such a wrong statement. They weren't even the most talented team that year.

Also, if you're going to bash Dale for not winning it all that year, then you at least have to praise him for assembling that level of talent. I wish he was still recruiting for LSU.

I would also venture to say that the 1990,1991 UNLV running rebs (johnson, augmon, and anthony), the 90's duke (hill, laettner, and hurlye), and the michigan fab five were teams also with an abundance of talent

The people belittling Daddy Dale don't know s***. If he had done nothing but the 1986 tournament run, I would eternally worship him. But he did so much more, he built this program from nothing in a football state. The only reason we're complaining about the program today is because of how much it's fallen from what he had built it, otherwise we wouldn't care. And he built this program as a class act. Not always following the letter of the rules, but in an ethical manner that treated his players with respect.
