re: How confident are you that Liam Shanahan can be a starting in the SEC?

He gets the ball back to the QB better than anyone else we had at that position already. That is a really good start. Doesn’t matter if the others are better blockers if they can’t snap then ball accurately.

As confident as Coach O is in him I guess?

An all ivy league tackle with his frame should do well plying c in the sec. Dont put too muck stock in the harvard thing. Ryan Ramczyk played div2 ball before transferring to Wiscy and is now an all pro NFL tackle. Brandon Burlsworth is another name that comes to mind. Elite linemen are frequently missed coming out of HS.
Liam was overlooked out of HS mainly because he was struggling to gain weight. Harvard also has put several alumni linemen in the nfl.

Here he is pre-Moffittized. He's gonna be just fine.

I’m confident because I trust the coaches, as we all should as fans by now. But I guarantee there’s not going to be a question of if he can be physical enough in conference play. He will have to block two of the most physical linemen in all of college football. That question will answer itself in practice.

Give him one week against Shelvin and Ika. If he is still the starter, he earned it. The depth chart is meaningless until the pads go on.

I read where his work ethic is pretty high and he is stronk!

Technique, intelligence, size, and athleticism are hallmarks of great linemen. Shanahan has at least three of the four. Evidently, the coaches believe he has the latter in sufficient quantity to start in the SEC. You don’t transfer to LSU from an Ivy League school, unless you have something to prove and are unafraid to face failure. Vote of confidence here.

He’ll be fine I think. From a physical standpoint, C is the least demanding of line positions. So if he can get the snap & the calls, it’s on.
You're right.
I'm thinking a 3-4 defense with a bull at nose is going to be physically demanding. A nasty nose will eat a weak center alive.
So let's add: Snap, the calls, & hold the line in his 1v1.

He’ll be fine. Biggest question would be his weight, and It looks like he is at 300lbs, maybe a tad over.
If he plays around 310lb-315lbs he’ll be just fine.
He’ll be prepared, kind of like the QB we had last year.

His IQ will help the group. Physically is a ? until they go gull throttle. His success is a real key to settle the positions going forward.

How often is a Center going 1 v 1 with a NT?
Usually he’s helping a guard (drawing a DT is sorta the point of having a 340 lb NT)

Seasons are won in the offseason. And Shanahan, being less 'distracted' than his younger peers has put in a lot of work.
And he has the ability to make the assignment calls and is the better/best snapper. That's the key. So even if he's 10% worse blocker than say Hines or Ingram it's still worth it.
Physically - good to maybe very good
Calls & Snapping - very good
Technique - good, needs more experience to get to very good
Overall, he won't be the best center ever. He's setup nicely to be a very good one though. Without the offseason work he wouldn't be 'setup' as nicely. He's added good weight and is quite agile/athletic. Could always be more/better. But this isn't a less-than-SEC body filling in.

You don't leave a school like Harvard to go play football in the sec unless you are a damn good football player that will start. Coach O also wouldn't waste his time on someone like that without evaluating him heavily and being very confident in his abilities to come in and play right away to fill a void. He's going to be our starting center and will be good. Just my bet.

I trust the coaches they earned that right

Yeah this staff definitely has a history of terrible player evaluation. I’m sure it will be a disaster

Nick Easton, G for the Saints
Adam Redmon, C for 'Girls
Cole Toner, G for Bolts
Just a few Harvard linemen currently in the NFL. Last year (or maybe the year before) Harvard had the most NFL players of any FCS school.
He'll be fine.

Holy frick, so you’re questioning the coaching staff that just won a National Championship? Maybe take up a hobby where you’re an actual authority so as not to divert energy towards something that’s already covered by professionals.
