Reasonable expectation would be to break into the 80’s somewhere for total defense

That’s a reasonable expectation for a loser.

Matt House was the worst DC in the school's history. It isn't close.

Ooooo, that’s not true, and THAT is not close! You must have missed some years.

the pass rush should mature and if the poor tackling is cleaned up, that alone will do wonders.

We will suck far less. Meteoric leap into mediocrity, which in all seriousness would be yuge.

This!

What impact players have they brought in to fix some of the holes, depth, and problems we saw last year. Offense they loaded up, forgot about bringing in defensive players

If we can be decent, we’ll have a great shot at the playoff.

25 and beyond will be nasty.

Missouri went from #104 before Blake Baker to #29 in yards per game in his first season.

They also had two very good corners and d linemen.

It wouldn’t take much!

We did see a team that finished with the #99 ranked total defense finish as runner-up in the nation. You saw an LSU team with the #108 total defense finish 12th in the final poll. LSU was 13th in the final CFP ranking, which would be two spots behind an at-large for the 12 team playoff.

If LSU doesn’t have a huge offense drop off (Top 25?) and a moderate defensive improvement (Top 60?), the possibility of making the 12-team playoff is high. Just have to go out there and win the games.

House's first season probably takes him off the top of the list...but not by much.

Tepper was bad. His defense tanked what should have been a very good 1998 season. Dinardo then doubled-down in 1999 and lost his job as a result.

Pelini in 2020 was bad. But I tend to put that more on the stupidity of Orgeron. Pelini was brought in specifically to run Ed O's "wet dream late 80's Miami/early 00's USC defense". This, despite the fact (1) LSU didn't really have the personnel to do so and (2) offensive football had changed a LOT since those defenses were effective. Ed just had so little actual understanding of the intricacies of the game that he didn't appreciate that. No DC could have succeeded under that buffoon of a HC dictating the defensive approach. That's why in 2021 the defense suddenly went from shite to dominant after the bye week when Ed got out of the way.

But NEITHER of those defenses had a best in the nation offense to work with. Not even close! Because LSU was so dynamic on offense last season the bar for "success" by the defense was incredibly low. And House couldn't even reach arguably the lowest bar in LSU history (or at least the 2nd if you feel the 2019 was even more dynamic than 2021).

So while House may not be the worst simply because he had 1 decent year and Tepper didn't. I think his performance this past season was the single worst defensive coaching performance in LSU history given the circumstances.

On April 21st, that SouthPark joke will officially be 25 years old. That’s the age where time flies by for a human and it’s time to grow up. For a joke, it’s 24 years past its prime. Let it go. It’s ok to be an adult.

Defense will take a step forward. Offense will take a step back. Tho the offense will still be good.

Unfortunately, we have room to improve considerably and still suck….I really can’t see how LSU D could possibly be worse than2023.

I personally believe that they will end up being much better by the end of the year. I think the big question is how long into the season will it take for the new coaches/players/scheme to gel. There will probably be some growing pains early in the year, just based off of all of the turnover.

This is the most accurate answer. Unfortunately, we will still see all the dumbass posts on the scoreboard calling for everyone to be fired in the first half of the first game. At some point, a DB will be out of place and someone will claim victory for saying that Cory Raymond should’ve never been hired back.

It will improve. Question is, will the offense also fall offsetting the gain in defense?

Well considering they were like 117th in total defense, hopefully a lot

If they can jump to Top 50 it would be a vast improvement!

I don’t know about the D overall, but the sacks, hurries, ect should take off quick. We have some really good edge rushers starting with Perkins and the best edge rusher coach in the country.

My expectation is to be in the top 50 and hope they're in the top 30. Its what's needed to compete for the playoffs.
With this staff, I'm hopeful it will happen.
By the way, has anyone figured out what exactly was going wrong on defense in 2023? Too complicated schemes, inferior staff, coaches not working well together???
When your at the bottom there's only one way to go, up!
Go Tigers!!
