Hiring of Coach O eerily similar to Clemson's hiring of Dabo

Swinney was named the interim head football coach on October 13, 2008, after previous head coach Tommy Bowden resigned six games into the 2008 season.[6] The Tigers had started the year ranked #9 in the preseason polls, but then went 3–3 (1–2 ACC) in their first six games.[7] At the time he was informed of his promotion, he was working with the wide receivers on their upcoming game.[8]

With a reputation as a top-notch recruiter, Swinney was chosen over Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning (former head coach of Wyoming), and associate head coach Brad Scott (former head coach of South Carolina).[9] Swinney's first actions as interim head coach were to fire offensive coordinator Rob Spence and introduce a new tradition, the "Tiger Walk", where all players and coaches walk through the parking lot outside Memorial Stadium about two hours before a game as they head inside for final game preparations.[10]

On November 1, 2008, Swinney claimed his first victory as the Tigers' head coach by defeating Boston College, breaking Clemson's six-game losing streak against the Eagles. On November 29, 2008, Swinney coached Clemson to a 31–14 win over South Carolina in the annual rivalry game, after which Clemson became bowl eligible.

After a vote of confidence from athletic director Terry Don Phillips, Swinney was formally named as Clemson's 27th head coach on December 1, 2008. In his first game as the full-time head coach, he lost the 2009 Gator Bowl to the Nebraska Cornhuskers 26-21.

Swinney's recruiting reputation became evident when he produced five top-20 ESPN recruiting classes in a row, including top 10 classes in 2011 and 2012.[11] As a result, Clemson was one of only 10 schools to be ranked in the top 20 of recruiting five years in a row (along with LSU, Alabama, Texas, USC, Florida, Georgia, Florida State, Ohio State and Oklahoma), and as of 2014 Swinney was one of only four active head coaches at the time accomplish the feat (along with Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Bob Stoops).[11]

Both were non-coordinators, great recruiters, players love them, named interim coach in middle of season, immediately fired the OC, introduced new traditions, named full time coach right after end of regular season...sorry if this has been mentioned already.

If O's first two seasons are like Dabo's, he isn't going to be afforded the time to become Dabo.

Except Dabo was never a head coach, let alone failed head coach, previously.

Dabo really didn't get things turned around there till his 3rd season as head coach, then was big time by 4th season. Not sure I see us giving O a similar amount of "cushion".

And LSU is projected to be in the former Gator Bowl vs Nebraska. But CEO ain't gonna lose that one.

Not like Clemson is a national power, he's kind of made them into a big time threat though. He's done a great job. We would be singing our praises if we were coming off a playoff win and NCG appearance.

Right, Dabo was a young, hot commodity on his up. They guessed right about his ceiling.
Da Coach O is a pretty well established figure as a coach.
You are correct that both are great recruiters and non coordinators. It ends there.

God help us if Coach O loses his bowl game.

Dabo is the model we all hope O imitates.

I don't think Dabo is given enough credit for his football smarts though. He is very tuned in to the game and seems to have good instincts.

Thanks for bringing some "facts" to this board. Now if our fans can let things play out and support this program, we'll be good!

Coach O will be very successful at LSU. He brings a lot to the table in terms of experience, recruiting ability and being a players coach.

People seem to be obsessed with his years at Ole Miss but, they fail to mention that nobody has been successful at that dump for more than a season or two. Those who have, cheated their asses off. I don't think that is a fair measurement of his coaching abilities.

Geaux Tigers!

Not an unreasonable comparison.

I'm not ecstatic over hiring Orgeron. But I see the possibility of a similar trajectory as Dabo... which, in truth, is good. National titles every year is unlikely-- especially in the SECw. But if the offense can be raised to a similar level as the defense... and the defense maintained at a high level... we can absolutely be a perennial top 10 team under Orgeron. And can be in a legit position to make the playoffs. We haven't really been that in the last approx 5 years.

I'm cautiously hopeful.
