I knew before I opened it, it was gonna be Welter.
I actually think Welter didn’t deserve most of the hate.

Who was the tiny utility infielder we used to have that everyone hated so much a few years ago?

Will Safford? Hal Hughes?

He honestly didn’t. I mean it wasn’t Welters fault that Les Miles was dumb enough to keep trotting him out on the field knowing he wasn’t anywhere close to an SEC caliber linebacker.

Welter was a decent backup. The reason for the hate was a lot of stupid fans thought Beckwith was better, which he was NOT at that time. Beckwith had a ton of talent, but he had no idea where to stand or where to run. Every time they put Beckwith in the other team would rip off runs, or complete passes, right where Beckwith was supposed to be. I remember one play when the opponent had the ball on about our 8 yard line. One of the safeties was trying to get Beckwith in position when the ball was snapped, effectively taking two guys out of the play.
Welter would play the position correctly; he just did not have enough physical ability to make the plays. Eventually they got Beckwith to the point that he had an understanding of his responsibilities and then the coaches made the switch permanent.
No one wanted to play Beckwith more than the coaches.

That was John Chavis, not Les, who did that.

Jordan Thompson got a lot of heat in '23, but came through at the end of the season
