Has a team ever negotiated a lower buyout?

I’m not ready to give up on BK, I do think he saved LSU from the dumpster fire O created, but he’s got some serious issues here. It seems like whack a mole, he fixes one thing, then another glaring problem pops up.
Obviously LSU can’t afford to pay his buyout until after season 7 of his contract at the earliest.
Just curious. Seems like there might be incentive if BK checks out and wants to leave.

IIRC Orgeron's buyout was negotiated.

you don't know when LSU can pay the buyout, when the people who pay are ready for him to go then he will be gone.

LSU negotiated with Les. It went from 7 to like 1.6.

BK will not be let go this year. There is to much left on buyout . Add to the fact there will be alot of HC positions open . If the season continues to go downhill most of the offensive coaches will be fired at the end of the season and a proven oline and OC need to brought in.

I wonder what the boosters will say to that? Like how many more millions they need to pony up so the $100MM dollar man can be successful?
BK will leave when he fails to produce and the national media piles on him as being inept. No amount of LSU fans booing will do it.

Have a look at how close both revenue and profit are tracking for this program. It’s very
When you start losing revenue (ie concession, parking passes, etc) then it becomes a function of what the admin is willing to tolerate. Although it does appear to be a high buyout currently, if you’re losing even 10M/game and your projections for the rest of the season track the same, then it becomes more palatable to buy him out.
But I agree, they (probably) won’t do it until after next season

This is not true, and clearly you don’t know any boosters. They do not have unlimited money and LSU cannot keep buying coaches out for amounts that run well into the 8 figures.
LSU is not A&M, not even close. Why do you assume no one on this board contributes heavily to the program?

The better question is how long does it take the big $$$ boosters to see Woody made another shite ?? Hire and get rid of BOTH of THEM! Or just let him handle the smaller sports(Baseball, WBB, gymnastics etc). He gave away the keys to castle with 10yr 90% guaranteed BK has been lazy and made plenty of bad hires!

To be fair, he’s given us 3 competitive teams, hopefully 4 this year, and kept the program from falling apart.

People don’t wanna accept the truth, but BK is not getting fired this year
This is a new age of NIL and teams don’t have the money to just pay 50m on top of 25 million dollar rosters
Jimbo was an outlier and people forget if you take him out, the second largest buyout ever is 22m with Gus at Auburn
Ever since Jimbo, fans of USC(80m buyout), Clemson(60m buyout) and LSU(51m) just think it’s nothing to pay that and move on. It’s not happening.

He has 1 big win vs Bama and besides that not a lot! 10-4, 9-3, 8-4 is not really competitive that’s lowering the bar for a school dumping millions into players, coaches and Facilities. The decline is real, regardless of what O left, BK did very good in YR 1 and now is just tripping over himself with bad hires/retention and no ability to make in game adjustments. How can you not know what your OC/Dc is installing for games and act clueless in the middle of the game?

Teams have, but those were generally different types of contracts. Kelly's contract will be tougher unless Kelly is amenable to settling to effectively retire with a bonus, if you will.
To negotiate, you need leverage versus the contract. Unless Kelly gives them cause outside of the team's performance, LSU will have no cause. If Kelly wants to fight it, it will end up costing LSU more money, and they will probably lose.
Miles and O did not have fully guaranteed contracts, which is now the norm when you poach big-name coaches.

If LSU wants to negotiate it downward, it has to have leverage. I’m not sure what leverage you think LSU has, but it doesn’t have any at the moment.
If you think someone will voluntarily let tens of millions of dollars fly out the window because they’re a “nice guy” and “doing what is right,” then you probably have about as much to learn about reality than I did as a young adult, which is a lot.

Kelly has to have a reason to do so. So in other words, no, not going to happen.

The most likely scenario where a buy out would be negotiated is when school can make a claim for firing “with cause” which may negate remaining time in contract. But if the circumstances surrounding the “cause” is ambiguous or open for debate then you are talking long protracted litigation after firing the Coach….. and then it becomes an all or nothing for both sides.
This is when both sides decide to mitigate their respective risks and negotiate a settlement of the buy out.
Unless Kelly does something that would justify a “good cause “ termination he would likely have no motivation to accept a lower buy out.

We did with Les when he returned to coaching.
