That 2013 season was fun just because it was the first time in forever the offense didn't suck arse. They should have been so much better though

Patterson is a brilliant defensive coach. Unfortunately, he had neither resources nor the fan support to put together contending teams each year.
TCU's NIL game is virtually nonexistent. He had only tepid support from the administration. When they had their old AD -- the one that went to Texas -- they were willing to push to give him a bit more help.
Now, their current AD -- an absolute buffoon -- managed to lose Schloss and Patterson in a single year. He is an unadulterated moron that has no business leading a Power 5 school. I suspect TCU will go back to winning 2-3 games a year, with a rollover rate in the coaches for decades. And that dumbass AD will end up fleeing to another school in a couple of years and will have left a destroyed athletic program in his wake.
I can't imagine what he'd accomplish at somewhere like LSU, where he'd have the support and could actually recruit. He'd probably be a beast.

My son was recruited by Patterson his first year at TCU, so we are pretty familiar with him. When hired, he was not ready for the HC position, but has really grown into it over the years. He did more for TCU then anyone could have expected, for a long time. It’s a tough career choice.

Mett gets too much love. He is the most overrated LSU QB I've ever seen. Remember the Ole Miss game? They were a shitty team with a shitty defense that was missing about 7 starters from their shitty defense. They started a bunch of freshmen and walk-ons and stacked the box. Then the Clemson Bowl game. Third and one for the ball game. Play action fake, beautifully called and executed with a man wide open in the flat. Ballgame! Right? Ballgame? Well, it would have been, but Mett threw it at the turf, and we lost.
Then the Georgia game. Mett played fairly well, but in an offensive game, in which neither side could stop the other at the end, Mett failed to move the team with a chance to go down and win it.
I saw little to recommend Mett, outside of some fairly good stats.

I think PantherCity's post is mostly accurate, but it's not as if TCU has Vandy-level football resources. Far from it.
They have a 46,000-seat stadium that just went through a $270-million renovation. The football team's success spurred alumni contributions and TCU now has one of nicest campuses in the Big 12. They have an indoor practice facility that's every bit as good as LSU's.
So Patterson had the resources, and TCU always has the support of the Fort Worth community. An inherent problem is that it's a small private school, and it's surrounded by alums from Texas, Texas A&M and even Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Baylor. TCU doesn't "own" anything in Texas as far as its recruiting base, and that will remain a major problem for anyone it hires.
Patterson has always been a good judge of defensive talent. Offense, not so much. He pretty much left the entire offense up to his offensive coaches, and they burned him in the end. (Of course, he hired Doug Meacham and Jerry Kill, the two coaches, and he's responsible for that. Does that sound familiar?)
Panther City was absolutely spot on about the TCU AD, a guy who was hand-picked by the former athletic director (who went to Texas) to be his replacement. (Just like Arnsparger going to Florida and recommending the underwhelming Mike Archer). The TCU AD is 40 years old and is totally in over his head. He has managed to lose the best football and baseball coaches the school has ever had in a span of five months!
LSU has never really considered Gary Patterson when it's had an opening. He had won a friggen Rose Bowl -- the Rose Bowl! -- and been to two NY6 games, including hammering Ole Miss in the 2014 Peach Bowl 42-3.
Roster depth is always going to be a problem at TCU, and so injuries are going to affect them more than most.
But to me, the biggest drop-off at TCU seemed to be at the quarterback position. Patterson had an excellent one in Trevone Boykin, but he was followed by A&M transfer Kenny Hill and Shawn Robinson, who couldn't throw. They've been using a kid from Iowa -- Iowa! -- since then.
The thing is, I'm not sure Patterson is what LSU needs right now. His resume stands on its own, but the college landscape has changed, and I'm not sure a guy like Patterson is willing to adapt.
If he wants to coach, someone will hire him. But his options are going to be limited.

He had Justin Fuentes at OC for a while, who went to Memphis and then onto Virginia-Tech. The guy you're thinking of is Dick Bumpas -- arguably one of the greatest football names, up there with Dick Butkus.

As someone who attended a great many games at Amon Carter, the fan support is a far cry from what you're suggesting. Patterson was forced to go cap in hand to local businesses to try to drum up support. The stadium rarely, if ever, sells out.
Sure, the campus is pretty. But programs aren't judged by IPFs anymore. That's late 90's to early 2000's speed. They could do far, far more than they do. Just look at the baseball stadium. There are so many lacking elements in athletics there, which put it firmly in the space of a mid-major.
Problem is, fans and administration think they're on the level of the SEC. They're legitimately delusional, perhaps one notch below Florida State. They're on Boise State's level, not LSU's. Not even FSU's.
But Fort Worth has always had the little brother complex being next to Dallas, and it tends to think its britches are bigger than they are. That makes for a much nicer town than Dallas by far, but when it comes to sports -- they're small potatoes.
