Apparently his mom is the boss if that family, his dad was a championship vaulter, but allowed his son to jump for Sweden, IF he had a choice!!!
If memory serves me, this goes back to how the US approaches, or at least approached, international track and field competition. He wasn't able to compete when he first wanted to compete internationally for the US because of his age.
Sweden had allowed it and since he had dual citizenship, he went that route and has continued out of gratitude. His family also spends quite a bit of time in Sweden, as I understand it, visiting his mom's family and have done so his entire life.
He has talked about this publicly, he made the choice with no coercion either direction. And he is treated as a national hero in Sweden as well.

The irony of that statement.

Let me guess one of them,...Billy Cannon?
A RB who never rushed for more than 700 yds. in a season, against segregated competition,...and a felon on top of that. Who else you got?
No, you see, the other three, Pete, Shaq and Joe represent the superlatives of their craft, so why shouldn't the fourth, and only Mondo is close to that, perhaps even more so, and on an International level.
That's why they didn't put James Buchanan's face on Mt Rushmore with Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln's.

Pete, Shaq, Joe and Mondo, understood to be the greatest college basketball player, arguably the greatest NBA center, the greatest college quarterback, and now the greatest pole vaulter ever,...pretty much with limited debate.
No argument or debate here. That is an outstanding group.

magine that the best pro football player in the world had an American mother, a German father, spoke perfect English, lived three months a year in the US but lived in Germany. Wouldn't it be foolish of him to play pro football for some shite league in Germany?
Not the same thing. Foreign nationals play in different leagues all the time, it's the international competitions where choosing a country becomes an issue. A bunch of German-born soccer players with American fathers played for the US team because it was an easier path to make the US team than the German national team.

What's his brother up to these days? One of the most clutch hitters we've ever had.

Priests take a vow of poverty. Athletes don't. He worked his whole life as an unpaid amateur to get to where he could earn a living off that work and you don't think he should do what is "financially beneficial". American companies do it every day by outsourcing. But I'll bet you buy their products without giving it a second thought.

Those are seriously “Purple & Gold” tinted opinions right there BAW!
HOWEVER #3: BDJ w/o a Doubt had the Greatest Season by a College QB EVER! W/O any debate as well!!!

So give me the best college ball player, because it’s between Pete and HAJ and him. Shaq in his prime was by far the best center and would shite on anyone else. And Joe had the greatest season ever for a QB and beat a crazy schedule. Mondo is going to have the top 8-10 jumps ever by the time he’s done. Those are all bonafide GOATs

He jumps for Sweden because Sweden hired his dad to coach its youth pole vaulters when Mondo was 15.
