For those who know pitching, can this pen improve in a meaningful way in the next month?

You saw an extreme example of this in 2023 and another smaller example last year in the regional. Yes we lost the regional but we played a really good UNC team as close as a team can get before losing. We also almost won the sec tournament.

Why not? I already see some improvement.

How should we qualify people who know pitching? Something tells me at least half the people who comment wont “know” it very well

The pen improved in immediate fashion when it mattered in 2023

Yes.

Need two or three more relievers to step while our main guys continuing developing.

Some of the guys have the potential to. Rizy is one who feels like he could bring it all together and be solid. Maybe Ware, at least as a one or two inning guy. Benge is another who could eat a couple of innings more reliably if he could just limit the non-competitive pitches. Schmidt certainly has the talent to. It’s just about how much he is ready to handle as a freshman in the SEC. I wouldn’t bank on Primeaux getting better.

It could be one who gets better. All. None. Who knows. I don’t think we can expect it, but hopefully we will see improvement in at least two. We need that plus Guidry and Noot moving from mid-week to the pen in the postseason.

I promise you coaches would rather a talented group of pitchers that are struggling to throw strikes and execute pitches than a group of average to below average guys that can lob it over the plate consistently.

It’s not like we are in a spot where we “are what we are”. At any point some of these guys could get right and we are cooking. If you are in the other scenario you are what you are.

Yes. The bullpen for the team that is currently 26-3 and 7-2, can continue to get better over the course of the year

by sheer probability, they all cannot keep performing this poorly

I agree. Noot is coming along. Maybe Benge and 2 or 3 more to be consistent. For example, I’m not giving up on Schmidt because of his age. He could come around soon.

Lower probability no one improves vs someone stepping up

There’s only 1 I have given up on, everyone else can absolutely improve

That would be me. But I can authoritatively tell you that of course they can improve a bunch. I’ve seen it happen several times. Mainieri’s teams used to almost all improve the pitching as the year went on.

Yeah, that was certainly a blast to watch, see develop. On both accounts. Our run into the SEC tournament and Regional was certainly a fun silver lining to a season that could have been a big total dud.

ETA I apparently don’t know how to post properly.

I will say this- until a couple of these bullpen arms make a move, game 3s will be an adventure. Shores doesn’t look like he will ever get us more than 5-6 innings.

I’m no pitching authority but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.
