No surprise to me that Merrifield is at the top in BA. The kid is solid.

Per Jay in the press conference streaming right now he's having individual meetings today and tomorrow. So if guys plan on leaving, we'll probably find out soon.

ETA: But we're around 42 or 43 guys with Coleman set to redshirt and Fontenot not expected to pitch.

Still a ways to go on figuring that out. For opening day I would expect Milazzo and Thompson at C and SS. Kling in RF and Pearson in LF. Pearson has struggled but we saw what he can do last season. Hopefully just a slump in the fall and he comes out in the spring looking like he did this past spring.

I'd be comfortable with what you suggested though. That speaks to the depth on the team. Good problem to have when you have so many guys you can plug in at different positions and have confidence they will do the job at a high level.

I think the biggest ? will be 2B. Merrifield/Dugas/Guidry/Nippolt.

Yeah what a crowded spot. Although Merrifield got more reps at SS than I expected. Interesting wild card there.

yea unless something changes with guidry looking better and better at SS i think thompson starts. i think guidry gets reps though and i think its a 4 way rotation at 2nd to start prolly with all getting reps and see who emerges and is a gamer.

Thompson and Pearson both had really poor fall's at the plate.

Pearson was a real head scratcher. Had the worst BA on team and 2nd worse OBP.

I think you are right about those players being in contention for second base. Jack Merrifield's play this fall gives him the advantage, IMO and if he repeats this production in spring ball, he would be my opening day starter. He has also shown his versatility this fall by effectively playing all four infield positions.
We don't know how Gavin Dugas will respond from his eye problem yet, but if he returns to his old self, he could get playing time in the outfield or second base.
Ben Nippolt has shown that he is a capable infielder who could fill in at the middle infield positions, if needed.
I think that Gavin Guidry has a large upside and just needs to tighten up his glove work to become a really good infielder. He has more pop in his bat than the others but, he needs to have better plate discipline to improve his BA.
Overall, I think we are stronger in the infield this year than in past years with Tommy White as a replacement for Jacob Berry and the four players above on the roster.

Ty Floyd has a pretty ridiculous stat line.

As recently as today, Jay still speaks very highly of Thompson. So highly that I don't even know that we have a SS competition at all.

Jay says 2B is wide open. Merrifield, Nippolt, Guidry and Dugas are obvious contenders, but he joked a bit about Jobert and Kling there. He wants every kid to look at themselves as a baseball player, willing to play anywhere, and not pigeon hole themselves out of opportunities. He said we may see 2-3 guys play 2B in a game regularly, based on matchups and situations.

Honestly sounded like Jay has cooled some on Guidry, and I have to think it's partly the 6 errors.

After fall, I'm pretty good with nearly everything we have...including pitching, starting and relief, we just have to figure out where each fits now. I'm still uneasy with the middle infield.

Pearson and Thompson will start. I am not saying they will be starters at the end of the year but they will be day one starters

I think if Thompson can get healthy and stay healthy he will be fine at SS. He needs some consistency to get the bat going. I'm hoping that is why the offensive numbers were not very good. 1 error all fall is encouraging. Especially after how he looked at the end of the spring.

IF he keeps this up or even close to it he should be the starting 2nd basemen. Gold glove JUCO guy there and the bat was on fire this fall.

Thompson will hit .270-280

Agree. Pearson was one of the best hitters in the conference as a freshman.

Tommy White said the pitching in the fall was better than he's seen. Not sure if he meant just at NC State or also their competition. Regardless, the dude goes out and hits .350 with 7 bombs, absolutely no drop off.

And, I've said it about Merrifield before...his SEC performance is a very small sample size. Once he struggled defensively at 3B, Berry came in from the OF to 3B, and Merrifield was practically done except for spot duty (I think he got only about 10-15 ABs in SEC play, 0 hits though).

I hope we have the greatest pitching staff in the country. 4 guys over .300 and two of them are barely over. Gross
