Expand the Play Offs

Simple concept...
Highschool does it
NFL does it
College should do it. I get it... it’s a money thing, it’s a player health thing, it’s a whatever else thing. Still makes more sense.
I’d be willing to bet 16 team play offs SEC could get atleast 4 in. And most of the time it would be SEC vs SEC. would show other conferences how dominant we are or give them a chance to prove other wise. Our top tier teams have looked much better than most top tier or top program in any other conference.

I say 8 teams. 5 power 5 champs, 3 at large.
Make every conference have a title game so the champion of that gets in, no matter what.

I think 6 is best. Top 2 get buys. Power 5 champs plus an at-large

Which really makes it a possible de facto 13 team playoff.

And what are your hopes for the regular season?
Posted on 10/17/19 at 8:36 pm to Moscow Mule
Easy fix and would take one additional week.
5 Power 5 Champs
3 Wildcards.
Done.

Transition to 6 immediately. Pick the 6 best teams. Top 2 with a bye, and the other 4 play to get to them. Eventually, transition to an 8-team seeded bracket. Last man standing. No more than 8 makes any sense to me, even though a "top 10 team" is something. Cut the cupcake games out.

I'm good with 4 for now. I would rather address the issue of rent-a-wins before considering expanding the playoffs. I believe FBS teams should not be playing FCS teams and that there should be FAR fewer FBS teams.
I would also like to see more standardization regarding the size of conferences and the number of conference games they play.
Ideally, I would like all conferences to be 12 teams, no more than 8 conferences, all play the same number of conference games, and force there to be some real OOC games again. I'm so tired of the first half of the season being a bunch of layups against FCS teams and FBS teams that straight up don't belong in the same league with the big boys.
Fewer rent-a-wins means more major teams playing each other, which means more teams losing, which means fans get to really see how conferences stack up against each other, and it means that likely fewer teams will be "on the bubble" for the playoff.

I think you have to go 6 or 12. Top seeds play at home until you get to the neutral site championship. This retains the importance of the regular season, because teams will strive for the highest seeds to secure a bye and/or home games. Does LSU want to travel to ohio st. in december?

top 8 teams
first round higher seed hosts to give an incentive to be top 4 and regular season still matter
semis and natty at neutral sites like there are now

16 team play offs
Man frick that noise. 16 is way too many teams. I think the regular season could still be critical and riveting if they expanded to eight teams. I would hope they never go beyond that.

The problem is, teams that lose the CCG would probably be out and the Wild Cards will be teams that stay home, making it a 13 team playoff where you are effectively punished for being a higher seed at worst or it becomes meaningless for some at best.
If you do 8, the conference championship games have to go

quote:if it's about player health, why let the FCS (1-AA) do it? You'd think the extra scholarships and higher budgets (for support staff and trainers, etc) would make it safer for a major college team; LSU vs say, McNeese.

I'd rather see the Big12 finish imploding and the other 4 absorb it and ND; and the playoff be automatically between the 4 conference winners. The result will be a de facto 8-team playoff with the conf championship games.

8 teams- 5 Power 5 teams, 1 Group of 5 (must be top 10 in playoff rankings), 2 at large
Posted on 10/17/19 at 10:13 pm to Moscow Mule
Go look at the top 8 right now. Penn St and Notre Dame don’t belong in the playoff. 8 is too many.
Posted on 10/17/19 at 10:22 pm to Moscow Mule
16 is probably too many, 8 is better. All the Power 5 champions, as long as they have 2 losses or less. If more than 2 losses, they lose their auto bid. The remainder is at large teams.
Heck I might even expand it to 9 teams and make the best Group of 5 team have a play in game with the #8 seed just to give the Group of 5 teams a shot.
I think that would be fair to all.
The committee only has to pick the at large teams, and seed the teams, with the non conference champs never being a top half seed.

Imagine if Texas and OU came into the SEC. The networks would implode with ratings. But I'm afraid it's a pipe dream. Texas and OU have is too good where they are now, and the OK legislature won't let OU and OSU separate.
