Imagine the young men and woman that don't make it out, in all the bigger cities of La., Lake Charles, Lafayette, Shreveport, Monroe, Baton Rouge and especially the entire New Orleans area?? I know one thing if I'm ever able financially, I would set up a place for these kids to get help but have to work for it at the same time. Not a hand out but a help out. These kids deserve that much, nothing like helping someone achieve a dream and help them end the endless circle of doom. There needs to be more people with the benefits helping these young people at the very least showing them a different path. Good for you Guice! GT

As a CHS alum, that article pisses me off so much. Derrius was treated better than any of his classmates, as the administration was sure to handle him with kid gloves despite a constant stream of incidents that would be a death sentence for any other kid. One of the best administrators I had at CHS also left because he disagreed with how differently they treated Derrius over the other students.

Hell, Derrius even pissed off Coach Boudreaux so much he kicked him off the track team.

Derrius has conducted himself like a model citizen since he arrived at LSU, and I admire him for that, but to say he was treated horribly at CHS is bullshite.

Like the article says, people who help break the circle of doom end up getting a lot of back lash from their neighborhood. Those people don't want to hear that someone think they are too good for them or they can be better because they are bitter about where they ended up in life. That can take a hard toll on a very young person.

I wasnt going to post this, but I will second this. He was given far more opportunities to make mistakes than other students.

I am glad he seems to have gotten it together. Lord knows he had every reason to not make it out

That article could spur an LHSAA investigation just like the willie allen article.

Jesus get your panties out of a wad man.

The article goes a little overboard but they are simply trying to highlight the point that he's from a rough background and was thrown into an upper-middle class white world with very little time or resources to adjust.

I don't think it's always a bad thing that a school would bend a little more for the kids who need the most help. I do agree you have to draw the line somewhere though.

No senior year of Guice.

Shouldn't surprise anybody though. Dude is a stud and will be a great pro.

The article makes it sound like Catholic is a racist hot bed.

The support for that argument is blacks in Old South BR questioning why he was going to the white school and Catholic making him rake leaves when he got in trouble.

Welcome to the world of accountability. At least Derrius recognizes how great Catholic High was for him.

In regards to CHS students being racist, I was there when Warrick Dunn was there. I would say Warrick was treated more like a celebrity than anything else. Everyone wanted to be that guy's friend. I'm sure there were a few racist a holes, but that guy was easily one of the most well liked and respected guys at that school. Warrick was a good guy, quiet, never in trouble and really friendly when you got to know him, but he was also very well liked and fully embraced by his fellow students. I never saw anything but respect for him.

I doubt it's a racist school. It's just easy to see how private school white kids could not know how to relate to an underprivileged black kid. It makes perfect sense. I just hate that it's so hard for one or the other to not even try to relate. Privileged kids don't even want to make an attempt to see eye to eye. Same with underprivileged kids. It's all about upbringing. People need to teach their kids that everyone is a person and you need to learn how to deal with every type of person even if you don't agree with how they live. Way too many misconceptions out there from both sides.

I agree the black guys at Catholic who are athletes are celebrities and superstars at these schools. I was there when Travis Minor was there and several others. Travis was also very humble and great attitude, great guy overall. If anything these guys didn't fit in because they were legit superstars not because they were black.Everybody wanted to be them. However Travis was a legit no doubt superstar and people felt hard to relate to someone or talk to someone who was being visited by Emmit Smith , Bobby Bowden, Steve Spurrier, and being featured on TV and the USA Today almost everyday not to mention Emmitt Smith giving him free shoes. They were in awe of these guys.

The article says Guice and his friends didn't know how to talk to the white man.

The article doesn't actually say the private school white kids didn't know how to relate to underprivileged black kids.

Catholic is a solution to the problem, not the problem like the article tries to infer.

Were you there in 1998 when there was the classic "white out" black history mass? Brando had to call a special assembly. That wouldn't make me feel to welcome would it.

No, I am sure they didn't say it to his face they did cowardly shite like that to let the black students know how they felt. I laugh at my fellow white alumni who are so quick to discount Guices experience. Let's ask Jermaine Hatch, Tasmin Mitchell, Travis Minor.... they might have a different perspective than you on the matter.

Who started the special treatment Catholic or Derrius? Derrius didn't recruit Catholic. You have no issues bending the rules to win football games...
