If one wants to have a productive career working for someone else, one needs to learn how to conform their behavior to the environment one finds oneself in.
Same would apply to whites acting out, they just probably have a longer leash, which is the real problem.

i understand what you're saying but the reverse is true too. He looks to be a future superstar. I'm telling you that I have seen him giving back to the youth up close this season.
Maybe instead of judging his perspective so harshly we should try to walk a mile in his shoes. Looks like he's well on the way to success. I'd even be willing to bet that even now he's at a stage in his life where people would do anything to impress him.

Acting soutshide and throwing up 4's, or being a redneck and having your rebel flag keychain will simply not be accepted.
They dont give a shite either way. They teach you to conform and your snowflake feelings dont matter.
That is what I liked most about going there. They taught us how the real world is

Of course it can but that's why you have people from that very situation help teach them and show them that all it is is bitterness and nothing personal. At the end of the day those same people or most would show respect for those kids who can make it out.
I would still do it knowing I wouldn't be 100% in turning every kid around but I would at least give them a foundation to build from and they would know if they wanted the out they have it. Some kids just don't want it no matter what you do but some do and those would be worth all of it. Some kids just want to tell the "story" of how hard it was. I have no doubt that it's harder for some but I also have no doubt that a lot of it is just that " A Story" to some. Hey I didn't have the most financial free upbringing and we struggled but we've done fine. Now my parents kids have a slightly better life, then our kids and their grand kids will have an even better life and I'm hoping so on and so forth. Having something like this all over the inner cities would help not only those people living it but the folks surrounding it as well. I hope something is done for the kids that really want it and need it. That life is utter garbage for our society and something very well could help if the effort was put forth, real effort not fake notoriety type effort. Something real for the ones that want it. It would not only help these cities out but a school like LSU would benefit tremendously from a recruiting standpoint. Soooooo many kids waste their God giving talent for an easy way out or what is thought to be easy.
It's not very easy to live a life style no one wants to help you with or where you have to watch your every move. It's crazy to think that's the easy route. Live your life right and reap the benefits from others that offer help to someone that wants better for them selves. You wouldn't believe the help you can receive from others by just wanting better for yourself. These kids should talk about that instead of what was hard, talk and see the things that helped you get where you are. These are the conversations that need to be had. Others will also want that and start looking for it instead of looking for the negative in their lives and act like its something positive or good to talk about. GT

I wasn't commenting specifically on Derrius, because, by all accounts, he looks like a great kid. I was replying to your statement in context.

Did you watch the oj special? It laid out a picture of how everyone is so willing to accept him as long as he did it their way?
I wonder if that same thing pays out locally at these restrictive/private/segregated schools to a lesser degree.

I don't know I'm just speculating, but Baton Rouge is in the racial spotlight and is prime territory for positive discussion and has the opportunity to lead in this as opposed to follow
I see what you're saying, but the entire point of CHS is that you conform or leave. It's that way for all students. Seeing how incredibly successful their graduates are leads me to believe their way works pretty well.

Guice is 100% full of shite!

This is ultimately the main idea here. Anyone who goes to CHS and tries to rebel or be different is going to get some kick back from both the admins and the student body. Why? Because they have developed what they believe is a winning system of turning kids into successful adults.
For some it works, for others it doesn't. I despised a lot of the stupid rules we had to follow at CHS. Looking back on it though, I see what they were doing and I appreciate it.

Eh, they do teach you how to be "succesful" in the real world, but they definitely shelter kids with all of their rules. Nobody is going to force you in line in the real world, it's up to you to make the right decisions.

You're talking school rules I'm talking culture clash.
The article didn't imply the institution has racial undertones, the students going there were being exposed to the other side of the tracks. Both ways.

Right. It's saying basically both sides looked at the other like they were aliens. Guice probably wanted nothing to do with them initially because he didnt understand them and vice versa. Its a culture shock both ways trust me.

It's Bleacher Report. It's sensationalism. Derrius obviously didn't have a terrible experience at CHS because he is always coming back on campus and to different CHS events.

There is no doubt that being 1 of 20 kids or so versus 1000 of another race would be "uncomfortable." I think at the end of the day Derrius learned how to be more comfortable around white people and vice versa. A couple of my relatives have been friends with him since early in high school.

I would honestly guess close to 1/10 of CHS is black. It's a predominantly white school, but there are way more than 20 minorities

quote:I think another thing that is missing the mark is the "rich white kids" sentiment. Are there rich white kids? Absolutely. But CHS is honestly a pretty good mix of income class among the white community. I would think Episcopal hits the "rich white kid" target more.

I can absolutely agree with the culture shock part. if roles were reversed I would feel way out of place
the way they say that kids picked on him though? no way. the good athletes there are worshipped and get all kinds of special treatment from the staff and students.
