You are really climbing trees here...... but a ULL education can do that to ya.... ok ONE more time..... does ULL have the talent to compete through an SEC schedule.... again it’s not that hard of a question......

In the Sun Belt, no. And that would go for any SEC school with Sun Belt resources.

Now, give us the resources that other SEC schools have with a recruiting area like the one we are in, we would be a consistent Top 40 contender.

Its such a stupid question. If UL played LSU's schedule all other things the same, 2 and 3 star roster, fractional budget which enables things like additional support staff and analysts etc... uhh yeah UL would be at a significant disadvantage relative to the competition and wouldn't do well. Like..yeah?

If Nick Saban didn't have his roster full of 5 stars and Alabama didn't spend the most money in the country on college football, would have won 6 championships? I mean shite Peej.

It's the same logic people use when they say that about UCF.

Now, put UCF in the SEC, give them the resources that other SEC schools get, and allow them to recruit to a place like Orlando over Oxford, MS. Now, you're looking at a potential consistent powerhouse.

I could see them having a point if UL reaches UCF/Boise State status where they’re cracking the top ten every year. As of right now, the better they do, the better for Louisiana. The whole world should think of good football when they think of Louisiana. Not all the bad things. If LSU is a national contender, UL and Tech are NY6 contenders and the Saints are in the playoffs, that’s a good thing for the state.

LSU fans get too caught up in why die hard UL or Tech fans don’t also love LSU. That’s ok. People let others influence them so much it’s sad.

Amen.

That's where the animosity comes from on the side of some (not all) LSU fans. I'm sorry, but as a Cajuns fan, I don't owe LSU anything outside of the tax dollars that I pay. The more I think about it, the more I start to realize that this was maybe why people don't like when we brand ourselves as "Louisiana." This maybe why people did not like the fact that we did not stay with the Southland schools back in the 1980's. It's because of days like this where we are talking about the Cajuns being ranked ahead of LSU's football team. And a Spring poll at that LOL.

Let's face it. Regardless of what people think, competition is good. Now, I'm not going to put UL on LSU's level by any means, but polls like these at least puts us in the conversation which is awesome. You see that's the problem with this state. It's why we are dead last in education and economic development. We are too comfortable here. As much as we value football, having two ranked teams in the State of Louisiana is a solid marketing tool that we can use for other things. We can grow from this kind of notoriety.

For both fan bases, take off the vermilion and white as well as the purple and gold glasses for just a second; and realize that this is a good thing. Sure, LSU underachieved last year. But they are still a top 15 program.

I think that’s a fair take. The defense really never adjusted to the point that you could assume LSU even wins against ULL last season. Even at the end. Saying that LSU wins that game easily is comical. But let’s be honest, how many good takes would you expect on the rant. Especially a topic that the primary complaint is that we aren’t ranked high enough in a preseason poll the year after we went .500

It's almost as if the ESPN writer(s) for that preseason ranking article knew what they were doing. There's not much I care for out of ESPN these days, but this one sure has provided entertainment!

It's pretty hard to be favored against UT in Austin when you aren't playing UT in Austin...or at all.

I see no issue with where they have the Cajuns ranked as they return a lot of talent from last years squad but I definitely think they have LSU way to low.

ULL can beat one team ranked below them I think....most of the rest would house them.

Lot's of interesting debates going on here about what I said earlier. Couple things.

In 2020 Ul only lost one game to Coastal Carolina by a field goal. A true toss-up kind of game that just didn't go their way in the end, but they won all the rest of their games.

The final score to the Ul Iowa State game was 31-14. Not some close win. The game was close until the end, and then UL pulled away. That's right UL pulled away at the end...you know the point in the game where the depth and talent should take over and the more talented team wins.

So could UL have beaten LSU last season? maybe maybe not, who cares. Could UL possibly beat LSU in the 2021 season. Not gonna happen. The point is this isn't the Cajuns of old who had horrible teams even for Sun Belt standards. These Cajun teams are now at the top of the G5 teams in terms of talent, depth, and most of all coaching. If the current trend continues, UL will be a formidable college football team who could challenge and beat a P5 top school. Such as Boise State did a decade ago.

Just get Elon musk to fall in love with Lafayette and invest there. That would turn UL into a Baylor level program over night.

but it’s not “Louisiana” or “UL”.

If you use UL or Louisiana, where does that leave UL-Monroe? Both are "equal" in the UL system and therefore both need their regional name to distingush between each other.
Just because admins in Lafayette jumped on the "let's market outselves as bigger than we really are" and "we are better than ULM" before those in Monroe, should not give them the rights to that name. False advertising.

Nothing new to see here. The state schools have all had their day in the sun. University of louisiana Monroe then Northeast Louisiana University won a national championship with Stan Humphrey s as qb in the past. Stan went on to Qib a super bowl championship in nfl. Ulm has beaten the likes of Ark and Alabama and other sec schools. My point is this is all cyclical and Ull is enjoying a good time right now. But this conversation they are having about beating LSU is one most of the state schools have enjoyed. But talk is cheap. Rarely have the state schools beaten LSU and it has been non existent in modern times.

So, they don't have a right to athletically market themselves in the way they want to because they aren't catering to a school that has an athletic budget lower than 4 Southland schools?

Well, we are bigger, 2nd largest school in the state for quite some time...not sure exactly, but I think it's around 70 years or so, maybe longer. We also have a bigger endowment than all of the other UL system schools combined. ULM tried to market themselves as Louisiana right from the start of the UL-home town option. It didn't work for them. We did it and it's working very well. Only a couple of sports sites still call us UL Lafayette, the majority use Louisiana as our athletic branding. Like LSU A&M @ BR just uses LSU.

Its funny, when Southwest Texas State changed their name to Texas State University, none of the other TX P5 schools bitched, moaned or blocked the change. Only in our state is something like this challenged by the flagship. Did anyone stop LA Tech from changing their name or UNO when they moved out of the LSU system?
