I’m not shocked by this. He was a very polished player coming into college, but lacks the true elite raw power at the next level. I don’t think he has a pure swing either. It seems broken now. It’s way too long and is often too far out in front of his back half.

I’m not sure just how long that leash is. They only gave him a one year contract for 2026. That said, they have kept him around for quite a while.

I think everyone in the thread would agree with what a friend of mine who has followed MLB for 5 decades once told me: “it’s HARD to break into the Majors and even HARDER to stay there.”
Although, for some players, another friend who has followed MLB just as long, told me “luck plays a significant role” as well. Some guys just get stuck with the wrong organization and can’t break through what is above them. I think he used Austin Nola as an example.
Great thread on just how hard it is to make it to The Show and stay there.

Kyle Schwarber (debut at 22) Spent 1.5 seasons in the minors before debuting. Was well below average for his 1st 3 MLB seasons.
He slashed 250/350/470 with 16 hrs in 400 ABs as a rookie. Hit 30 HR in his soph season. Quit making shite up
DYLAN CREWS struggled in AA & AAA. No need to worry about comparing mlb struggles. He can’t hit in the minors

There is a list of mile long of can’t miss prospects that just for whatever reason could not make it
I would have beat a lot that Mark Appel would be an ace for a decade

I will be in Rochester in a few weeks....hope to see him play!

Since the OP loves small sample sizes, Dylan is hitting .320 in April.

I’ve said it before and got flamed on the Trant, Dylan was rushed through the minors and he just hasn’t adapted to the higher levels of pro ball.

If you want to talk about consistency, it was Crews in college for 3 years.
There’s a huge difference playing against elite pitching for 162 games vs once or twice a week like college.

Not really. He didn’t light the world on fire but he didn’t exactly struggle either

I don’t have to make shite up unlike you guys are for some reason. For starters, he didn’t have have 400 ABs as a rookie. He had 232.
.246/.350/.487
.211/.315/.467
.238/.356/.467
Those are his numbers for his 1st 3 seasons. Again, not great.

The kid has had zero continuity. He was rushed through the system to make his MLB debut before being sent back down to work through a swing change.
He has less than 1 full season of MLB at bats AND less than a full season of minor league at bats.

may have felt that way but it certainly isn't the case.
He got his callup in 2022 and hit .197 (73 games)
2023 hit .185 (90 games)
2024 hit .258 and won the AL silver slugger for the utility position (149 games)
2025 hit .251 as a utility guy (144 games)
2026 is the first time he's been able to lock into a single position and be "the guy" at 2B. We'll see how it goes but it's not like the Ranger just plugged him at a position and let him figure it out for years. He has started every position but P & C at the big league level and has a WS ring and a silver slugger going into year 4 to show for it.

Spent a full season in the minors. Crews debuted 5 months after he was drafted.
This isn’t true.
Bregman was drafted in 2015 and debuted in July 2016. The Astros were in the middle of a division title chase btw
Crews drafted in 2023 and debuted in August 2024 to a nationals team that sucked.
I’m not going to check the rest but I knew the Bregs was wrong offhand as an Astros fan and lsu fan

Hitting .320 in AAA and on 5 game hitting streak. Don't let him get hot. Lol

Only 17 ABs thus far, but he is not making his case to be brought back to the 40 man MLB roster.
Just a little FYI on how baseball rosters work. He is on the 40 man roster. Clubs can only carry 26 active players in the clubhouse. The rest are on IR or assigned to the miners. You can't call a player up to the majors unless they are on the 40 man roster. So, he's still on the Nationals roster, just not active with the team.

He still has time to figure it out
I think the issue is the professional hitting coaches know the issue but he's resisting the swing changes they want him to make. He's had big strikeout issues with certain types of pitches since he was at LSU and was prone to big slumps. People gloss over that because he would also go on long hitting streaks.

Sorry, that’s just not the case. People would call it a “big slump” if he went 0 for 4 one game because he had the expectation of being the best position player ever to wear the P&G which he maybe not even arguably was. He was never a big slump kind of player in college.
