Agreed - look I want them to do well make no mistake, but I'm just not gonna invest optimism until I can see tangible reasons, and nothing can be determined in that regard due to who we've played.

I remember last year there was some excitement about the start, we beat Fla. St and then Kansas St. on the road, but turned out neither of those teams were very good and it was fools gold.

WTF is a Kenpom?

I watched a dude dribble dribble and bouncy pass for a score. That's all I needed to see.

This is 1990 UNLV level. Just need to buy CoachMc a towel.

I think we’re gonna look back and ask why wasn’t Miller given more minutes early to help with the front line play. Tamba is a nice energy guy but is small and won’t hold up for big minutes in league play. Reed is what he is, a jumbo sized Derek Fountain. The front court reaching max potential is Nwoko and Miller, what’s going to happen in league play is Nwoko will start to be squeezed and he won’t get those easy looks and lobs he’s getting now so that production will be cut in half or worse. This easy part of the schedule should be Miller developing into a productive role alongside Nwoko. We’re going to look back and ask why we weren’t taking this time to address this.

Tamba to me is just a whatever add we did. I highly doubt he will ever hold up in conference play. No idea why he plays as much as he does. Thought he would be an end of bench 5-10 minute game type of guy. Did not envision him getting as many or more minutes than Nwoko, Reed and Miller...although Reed has been on a slight minutes restriction coming back from his injury.

I would think once we get into conference play the front court is mostly going to rotate between Nwoko, Reed, Miller and Sutton with less Tamba mixed in. Just a guess. He doesnt do anything particularly good, just isnt bad necessarily with anything either. He is this year Dji Bailey basically.

Nwoko has been biggest surprise to me, he has more points than minutes right now which is a helluva start. the question is will he be able to be a dude in SEC play or be more secondary like he was at MSU last year is the question ultimately there.

My biggest concern is our defense especially at the guard spots seem really lacking. Thats how bad teams like FIU and Alcorn St can dump over 80 on you is not having good defense from your guards. Dedan seems like quite a defensive liability so far despite his prowess offensively. The dropoff in skill and ability from Thomas to every other guard we have is pretty nuts too. I dont know we have enough skilled guards on this team in the end. We NEED Mackinnion to start hit 3's because we will absolutely need that later on.

He's high energy and always brings it, which this team needs with a lot of chill, laid back types.

You probably don't have to wait that long. You can start to follow the metrics and watch the trends over the next few weeks as more data (i.e. more games) comes in. For example, LSU was winning in the non-conf portion of the schedule last year, but their predictive data ratings (i.e KP and others) weren't particularly good and were trending downward despite winning (LSU started out 7-1 last year). That left me with some big concern as to how good the team really was going into SEC play despite being 11-2. We found out very quickly that they weren't very good.

The encouraging thing is LSU has been moving up in the ratings so far, somewhat substantially. That wasn't happening last year even though they were winning games in the non-conf schedule.

IMO, over the next two weeks (4 games) you start to see the data become more meaningful and you can start to get a better sense of where the team could be headed.

Your guess is probably right. Reed is still on minutes restrictions and Miller started the year injured and is one of the youngest on the team. He had half of the team's turnovers in the 1st half in the last game. Tamba being a taller and more athletic Bailey isn't an insult.

This team is taller than past teams, especially at the 2 and 3. We are probably going to be bigger there than a lot of our opponents, so switching will be detrimental. We should probably stay in a straight man and try to recover from switches as soon as possible. I saw a good amount of zone in the last game, which could be effective as our primary defense.

What is it with you making shite up about Miller? He wasn’t hurt to start the season, he got bumped in practice before the scrimmage and was held out for precaution, he hasn’t missed a real game. He also didn’t have half the turnovers last game, he had 3 just like Reed. The team had 11 turnovers so 3 is half of 11? Why do you do this?

Well

But they are shooting as a team at a clip that is better than I recall for some time, both FG% & FT%. I called upon my stat nerd self and looked back all the way to 2002.

Our best shooting seasons
2002 - FG% 48.7%,
2019 - FT% 76.9% i
2002 - 3 PT% 38.3%

Our average 2002-2024
FG% - 44.6%,
FT% - 70.3%
3PT% - 33.6%.

I know it's very early, but here is our shooting so far. I expect FG5 & 3PT% to decline when we play better defensive team teams. FT% may decrease or remain the same; defense does not directly impact it, but fatigue can affect free-throw shooting.

FG% - 54.6% (almost 6% better
FT% is 80 % (just over 3% better)
3PT% - 34.1% (just over the average for that time period and better than all but 7 seasons)

Perimeter defense looks shaky, but I can't decide if it looks more like them lacking the skills/technique or them just not really meshing yet.

They usually look decent in the paint, though they sometimes look like they are getting in each other's way. They need to rebound a little better, which goes back to learning to play together better and not getting in each other's way, but not hesitating to get to the ball. Those fine lines between bad, good, and great team play.

In short, ask me again on December 14th after we have played Drake, Texas Tech, and SMU

But as per my nature, I am hopeful for the season.

No, he meant basketball, the sport virtually all college sports fans care about. Not college baseball which less than 1% care about.

Settle down, Francis.

I meant to say half of the 1st half turnovers in the last game. Corrected it. He had 3 of the 6 in the first, which is partly why he didn't play more. And he missed the trip to UCF due to injury, did he not? Truth be told Nwoko will probably still start in front of him.

So you can’t answer, you just double down on the nonsense. You know what you don’t need to answer, pretty sure we all know why.
