Alabama has UAB, which was a VERY good team and USA.

Doesn't Rice field a mens team?

You are correct on the UAB, sorry I missed that one. I was thinking more SEC-related but the Blazers have had a good program for a while.

Rice University only has club Men's Soccer.

Rice Lads

In my opinion the name does them no favors.

I know a girl who just got a full scholarship to play women's soccer for LSU.

Why not men too? I can't see how women's soccer would be more lucrative than male soccer.

In Womens sports, you either get a full ride or nothing. You cant split scholarships like you do for mens sports. However that wouldnt be necessary as the womens sports get more scholarships then necessary. For example, mens tennis gets 4.5(for a sport that needs 6 to start) and womens gets 8. Mens track gets 12.6 while womens get 18, and so on......

Soccer is already bigger than hockey and is arguably bigger than baseball in the 12-24 demographic. Don't let baseballs popularity down south fool you into thinking it's like that in most parts of the country.

And at lacrosse being in the same conversation.

Wrong. Last season most of the OOC games were broadcast, at minimum locally on CST, and every SEC game was on TV.

Never is a bit strong, but yes, basketball attendance isn't great. But...

it doesn't make any money

You have to look at tickets sold, not asses in seats. There are A LOT of people that buy basketball season tickets and for one reason or another don't go to the games. The money has still been paid however. Plus, college basketball is immensely more popular nationally than college baseball. While football is the biggest draw, basketball is second in value when it comes to the huge TV contracts between the networks and conferences. The vast majority of the money made by the athletic departments comes from the TV contracts which basketball, and to a much, much lesser extent, baseball, play a role in determining the value.

Specific to LSU, is the "gate" at the baseball games larger than the game at the basketball games? Probably so once you consider the baseball suites. Does basketball not make any money? Absolutely not. Does basketball bring in more money to LSU than baseball once you look at the big picture? Yes

I say we fold the men's tennis and swimming programs and use those schollys for mens soccer.

So fold two programs that lose a little bit of money, and replace it with a program that will lose a ton of money. Makes sense

Six scholarships go a lot farther than none.
If LSU were to add a men's sport soccer would probably be first. I would like to think that rugby would be second, followed by lacrosse.

Would have loved for LSU to have a team. Many of the guys I played HS and club ball with went to LSU and would have definitely played if a team was available.

That's to make up for the 85 scholarships football gets.

You can't blame it on Title IX. LSU athletics brings in plenty enough money to sponsor more sports if it were a priority. It's just not something LSU or the other SEC schools are interested in.

Look at many schools in the Big 10. They have to follow Title IX rules just like everybody else, and their revenue is comparable to that of SEC schools, but they sponsor far more sports for both men and women.

But we're talking college soccer not the national team so lacrosse is very much in the conversation.

Lucrative has nothing to do with it. The only two sports that make colleges money are Football and Men's Basketball.

Women's sports don't make any money but men's sports get cut in order to comply with Title IX. LSU used to have a pretty good Wrestling program in the 1970s and 1980s but it got cut due to Title IX.

Lots of really good high school mens teams across the state. Shame LSU doesn't have a mens team. I understand why, but its still a shame. Had a lot of buddies back in the day go to smaller schools on soccer scholly just to keep playing. No doubt LSU could field a good team.

Are you just making stuff up?

Look at Texas and OU. Texas has 8 men's sports and 10 women's sports. OU has 9 men's sports and 10 women's sports.

LSU has 8 men's sports and 10 women's sports.

Texas & OU are in the Big 12 not the Big10.

I know it is confusing since the Big12 has 10 teams and the Big 10 has 12, soon to be 14.
