But how about that malachi dupree 7th round selection? You cant tell me another year wouldn't have helped.

He may have improved his stock a little bit but the writing was on the wall that he was not top round talented and it has shown in his ability to catch on in the NFL.

Other than a handful of guys on that list they seemed to have made a decent choice in leaving early.

Hes still a bit of a tweener but I think he goes by the end of the 3rd if he runs well. Coverage isnt his strength but hes great in blitz packages. I dont think he has the frame to beef up into an edge rusher so he will have to prove he has the speed to play coverage

Where is this guarantee that coming back will raise draft stock.

Not to mention, it has to be a huge difference in draft grades to make financial sense to stay...say someone going from 5th round to 1st round.

Its all about getting to that second contract

The current rookie contract policy made it make little sense to stay another year as long as you're a day1/2 draftee

Then Stevens, Queen, Shelvin & Ed Ingram are guys is Keep an eye on

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted Les, but all of those are absolute possibilities and probably even likely.

O’s best work was getting Rashard, Fehoko, and Fulton back last year. If he can pull a few this year, maybe Queen or Philips, Cush, and Ingram imo, it will be another big success for him.

But with those guys, they had the lure of coming back to play for a championship, and playing for an established QB. The job to recruit them this year will be much harder.

he has that rare combination of size speed, and coverage ability

Wut?

He was caught from behind by a qb last year...he’s nowhere close to having elite speed and if it’s one thing he needs to work on is his ability to cover

I think he stays. He needs to define his position and play better in coverage to get drafted as high as he possibly could. He seems to be a bit introverted as well in a good way.

Stevens could definitely help himself in the draft more than guys like Chaisson, CEH or Cush. He is great at what he does, but he’s limited as a safety because he isn’t great in coverage. He wouldn’t hurt himself other than the potential for injury, but he could really help his draft stock if he could improve in coverage. That would make him less of a situational guy and a potential every down player. That’s a BIG leap from where he is now in regards to playing safety in the NFL.

Queen would be drafted because of his athleticism, but he still doesn’t play smart and blows a lot of assignments. He could definitely use another year. If Ingram leaves without keeping his shite together for a full season after kissing so much time, he will be a low round pick. I think these two would hurt themselves more by leaving early than Stevens.

And how good can he and Todd Harris be as the starting S duo next season?

I think as of right now, assuming Jacoby returns, Mo Hampton would be the other starter and Harris / Vincent would be nickel and dime. IMO

Calling your college career sentimental rah rah bullshite is pretty shallow thinking. When these guys fball careers are over they will probably look back on their years at LSU as the best years of their lives. Its not all about a stepping stone to money.

Steven's has had the fortune to play all over the field, including special teams and offense. Since versatility is such a valuable commodity in the NFL his draft stock may even be higher than his rating as a safety / linebacker.

I think he’s the leader of defense next year and a guy who could climb into 1st or 2nd round.

Guys he compares to are Ronnie Harrison and Obi Melifonwu. Older style box safeties who can play the LB/SS hybrid position in sub packages. He isn’t an every down NFL safety or LB at this point so does he take a lower round eval and wait on a second contract or comeback and work on his coverage skills, maybe even change positions, to increase his rookie deal salary?

Not really, they have the same amount of sacks he has 8 more tackles but Delpit had more picks and TFLs.

I’ll tell you this, though, we better get more safeties in this year’s class, because in 2021 we’ll have one safety plus whomever we sign this year. You don’t want to rely on freshmen at THAT position.

If I’m not mistaken, Harris should qualify for a redshirt this year. We would have Hampton and Brooks for 2021, unless Hampton leaves for MLB. Granted Brooks looks more like an OLB than a safety, but he can certainly play that SS/run-fit role as you mentioned.

So we could potentially have three safeties on our current roster back in 2021. Regardless, we do still need more.
