in scoring defense? Cause i sure see a lot of, "The jury is still out on Chavis" and "3rd and Chavis" comments

All with a terrible offense that keeps putting you on the field.

That is pretty good, given the amount of time our defense has to spend out on the field.

I don't think too many people will view chavis in a negative light.

If we had an adequate offense, we'd be ranked even higher.

Teams know they don't have to score much on us. Put a few on the board and run the clock out.

Miles has proven that he'll make changes where changes are needed (this hire being an example)...I have no doubt that he will do what needs to be done after this season.

Still short-sighted. You can't explain away everything with a single statistic or a single reason.

You'll have a low scoring defense when you can hold teams to field goals like LSU does. Notice that Ole Miss attempted 5 Saturday. LSU plays the bend but don't break defense, which is annoying as it gets. I wish they could step up and stop someone before they cross midfield. That's why LSU is ranked high in scoring defense but they give up a lot of yards.

There too much of a gap between #8 defense and #106 offense.

It improved since last year for sure, but I am still not sold on Chavis. I dont like his style. Gives up too much. Not enough attack style defense.

That's the bottom line, but doesn't tell the whole story. This bend but don't break defense limits our offensive possessions.

3rd down defense - 45th

That's where we need improvement. Then we can give the offense more 3 and out possessions.

You don't get to have the 8th best scoring defense after 11 games by accident. Is it and end all be all stat, no, but you have a top tier defense if you are only giving up 14 points a game.

There have been a few reasons discussed in this thread why this is still misleading, though.

Chavis gets an A+ in my book.

Not because his defense has been dominant, but because his defense is on the field the whole game.

IF, our Offense was competent, I would bet the D would be a lot better.

Funny how that works.

So, this has everything to do with the offense but absolutely nothing to do with the defensive scheme?

Several outstanding defensive players being redshirted this year, Hicks, Davenport, Montgomery,Brockers and Loston will infuse some much needed quickness and talent to the Chief's defense next season. Looks like the scheme is as good as he had at UT. Just needs the right sort of talent to play effectively. Even so, with an effective offense this season, this would probably be a top 3 or 4 defense in scoring and yardage. They are usually playing exhausted by the fourth quarter.

I haven't been one of those. The defense is giving up a lot of yards in between the 20's but has been very good in the red zone. They have been on the field a lot due to our offense. The defense ins't the problem but I just hope we don't jumt the gun and give chavis a huge raise and extension just yet. We have enough money tied up to peeps who aren't worth what they are getting paid.

Its not misleading at all. If our offense was ranked 8th in scoring i highly doubt people would say you didn't have a good offense.
