easy schedule

we're not that good in yards/game, which is more indicative of your ranking

IF, our Offense was competent, I would bet the D would be a lot better.

Yep. It's a two way street. We're 101st in time of possession. Both units are to blame. Offense can't sustain drives and defense gives up too many 3rd down conversions.

God i hate when people say this, yea if all else is equal than a team with less yards/game is better. But i don't care how you shake it, you don't allow only 14 points per game unless you have a top tier defense.

So we have the 8th easiest schedule?

They score the game according to ypg not score?

The "bend but don't break" defense gives your offense fewer opportunities to score.

Every time you give up a "3rd and Chavis", you have 3 fewer plays to move the ball yourself.

Overall, I think we are ranked 28th or so on defense, below 4 or 5 SEC teams. That's good, but not fantastic. A lot of those stats were built up during that ULL/Vandy/MSU/UGA run, too.

It's all relative. One reason why the offense runs so few plays is because the defense is on the field so long. That's why we were completely dominated against Florida.

I think the plays per game differential falls on both the offense and defense.

The defense isn't close to the cluster it was last year and this is improvement. But it's not the end all.

The defense needs to force more three and outs and help with field position. This has been an issue even early in games before the defense is gassed.

I'm sick of hearing about the defense being on the field too long. It's their own fault. The bend but don't break crap that we run not only tires the defense, but it keeps the offense on the sidelines picking their noses. The offense seldom gets the ball with good field position, except after a kick off return. If the defense doesn't want to get tire, they should force a 3 and out or a punt occasionally.

There are two reasons our offense sucks, and one of them is entirely on Chavis. Part of the reason we get so few plays and possessions on offense is that Chavis refuses to actually stop the other team with aggressive play calling. We give up 3rd downs, especially 3rd and longs at a ridiculous clip.

The UF game is a perfect example. While we held them to 13 (including a missed FG), they kept our offense off the field and dominated TOP.

Same in several other games. The defense is not DICTATING the play. The Ole Miss game plan was horrendous. I am sorry. We let them run and pass all over us and got lucky our defense stopped them several times inside the 20. You can't keep expecting your defense to hold up like that. Look at the MSU game.

The only decently coached defensive games this season were Auburn and UGA. Otherwise, Bend-don't-Break defense hurt our team.

yards per play show your efficiency in stopping an opponent on every play. it is by far the best variable in measuring a defense (or offense, on the flip side)

I know what you mean. FL and Bama didn't have a chance to rack up defensive stats against the high powered offenses of North Texas, FIU, Chattanooga, Troy, Charleston Southern.

Yeah, except that the score is based upon the score, not the ypg or the ypp.

a lot of things can lead to scores that have nothing to do with defense. field position is a big variable

stopping your opposition from moving forward is the goal of the defense, and it involves no outside variables

I'm talking about LSU. There was as stretch where our defense seemed really good, and it was against those teams I mentioned.
I personally don't think our defense is striking fear into anyone's heart, regardless of where we rank in points allowed.

LSU is 15th in yards per play, which isn't bad at all, but the number of plays they've had is ridiculous and is not entirely on the offense.

That stat, too, can be misleading though. We eliminate big plays most of the time, so that number goes down. Last year it was all big plays killing us. This year, there have only been a few. Even worse though is we'll stop them for 3 yards on 1st and 2nd down, put them in 3rd and 7, and then give up 8 or 9 yards for the first. That would give you about 4 yard per play average. So its not saying much.

against non-horrible teams we're good for 1 late huge play that puts the other team in a position to win
