I don't have a problem with property taxes as concept. I have a problem with how they're spent. I'm willing to put money towards things that matter and improve QoL, but that doesn't seem to be happening.

This is the gripe, and it’s a legitimate one. The “taxation is theft” retards are about the same level of intellect as Q tards

I think the actual resentment is this; most taxes are assessed on income received, Example, you only pay taxes on capital gains when you receive those gains. On the other hand, property taxes are based on "assessed value" every year even though you do not receive that increased value until you sell the house,
In other words the government decides how much your house has appreciated and taxes you on that unrealized gain even though you have not actually received it. Further they tax you not once on that gain but every year

It's baked into rent.
Problem is renters can vote for a millage and then nope out when their lease expires while homeowners have to sell at a lower price to account for the taxes the buyer will face. Thereby making them less mobile.

This.
People should be upset that congressman are paid millions of dollars with our tax money. They should be upset about the way it’s distributed to those who don’t pay taxes. They should be upset that they don’t hold their elected officials accountable and keep electing them over and over and over again even though they are accountable to party bosses and special interest and not people.

Taxation isn’t theft? Try not paying your property taxes and see what happens. Try not paying your income taxes and see what happens.
If it’s not theft, then why do they use violence if you don’t comply?

I could get on board with across the board sales taxes and no more property or income taxes

Like how the students at LSU voted for a lazy river that they would never pay for?
This argument is overblown. Homeowners in my county have repeatedly voted for every fricking school bond issue on the ballot, for robotics centers that 50 kids primarily use for millions, tens of millions on stadiums we don't need, for one reason: the measure always includes language that says your tax RATE won't go UP. Well, it could have gone down if but for bond, after bond, after bond.
And never mind that you've (or more accurately, the bank you escrow with) watched the assessment district increase the value on your house by near the state max every year (10% in TX,) and they vote for it anyway.

My issue is that property taxes are based in n milages. A person with a $70k shack and a person with a $300k middle class home are going to essentially use the same services. Property taxes should be based on a flat fee.

Where do the naysayers think property tax money goes? Into someone’s bank account?
In TX, The issue isn’t the property tax itself. It’s the rate + the increases.

Property taxes pay for services related to the property - police, fire protection, road maintenance, etc - plus a few other things. It’s a tired argument.
Exactly

Can you elaborate on this comment?

Having good school and government services around you keeps you from living in the ghetto whether you “use” them or not.
Then why not call it what it is, a "no-ghetto tax."

I get paying for the services but there has to be another way to pay for those services other than property taxes. If you buy it outright you should own it outright.

Damn bruh...and I thought my $240 a month was high. $16800 in property tax is insane.
What pisses me off the most on our PT is having to pay a millage for a local middle school and I don't a single child, nephew, grandchild, etc. attending that school.
