Same situation as Perrilloux back in 2006 and 2007. He was probably the better of the two LSU QBs each of those years but was only seen in cleanup duty.

I think you see Ju’Juan in some wildcats too.

A non-sequitur. No I'm not saying Van Buren is better than Nuss, but ... I do believe Perrilloux had more varied talents than either Russell or Flynn and could have been a valuable asset if he had been incorporated into the offense in those two years, rather than just closing out blowout wins.

They will run van Buren in the red zone. He's big enough and athletic enough, plus his arm will be more respected.

In the redzone it's not about out running guys to the corner it's usually qb power with maybe an option to go hot to the tight end or inside wr

Why do so many here think that Van Buren is a running quarterback?

He's much more similar to Nuss than he is to Jayden Daniels.

This is what I really expect but if we are winning our games and looking like a contender I could see some development plays occasionally for two reasons. One to limit the hits on Nuss in a long season and two to put ideas in opposing teams minds (i.e. chess moves).

No but he’ll likely be the starter in 2026. He has really good potential. Lit up the Aggies and UGA last year

I just don't see it happening. You want a little size in the red zone

I agree but based on last 2years of LSU RZ OFF, downs 1-2 inside zone handoff or run for zero or negative yards and 3rd down pass…if not for JD5 improvising it was as bad as a LES Miles RZ play calling. Les/LSU had running backs/OL that could get 2-3yd push up field vs the OL last year was very soft/bad for running blocking much less tough yardage plays.
Without digging up the numbers when did LSU gain a critical 1st down or TD in the RZ on a Designed run?

Pretty sure the consensus amongst those who have attended practices is that es got a lot of zip on his throws, is elusive when scrambling, but has never operated in an offense like this. Poor performance is to be expected at this point

I have about as much knowledge of the quarterback packages LSU is putting in as everyone else here (which is to say none), but I do remember Brian Kelly saying that he hoped to redshirt both Van Buren and Johnson. Now, he could clearly vary from that, but it was at least his intent.

Personally, I would prefer them develop plays that can get the ball into the end zone with the quarterback who just took the team down the field and works constantly with the first team. I'm just not a fan of bringing in someone cold off the bench to handle the football at the most crucial points in the game.

But I doubt Kelly or Sloan will be asking me for the play call.
