Bertman didn't have to completely retool the roster every single year. Its gonna be tougher to have a 90s style run when you have to replace over half the team every year.

No. He missed a regional in 1988 (smaller field). Starting in 1990, there was a regional in Baton Rouge every year until he retired.

I often wondered if Skip had not come here and had stayed at Miami as an assistant - in an "It's a Wonderful Life" type playback what college baseball not only here but in general would be like today.

College baseball before Skip got here was on the same level as tennis, and I don't think that's an exaggeration. It still is like that in 97 percent of the schools in the country. Back then it was pretty much 99.77 percent. State had a bit of a following for baseball, that was it.

Had Skip not come here and created what he did the SEC teams that have some following now and the in state teams that have some, I wonder how much of a following they would have today - I honestly think Skip impacted that as well as some schools tried to imitate what he did here with varying degress of success but none really has ever matched it consistently.

After his initial season in '84, Skip's worst SEC record was 17-12.

Like others have said in this thread, it's not an apt comparison between eras, but that is still an incredible run. No one will ever touch that again.

Give it time

Current projection under Warren Nolan has LSU at RPI #56 at the end of the season. That projection has us ending the season 31-25 (11-19) with these projected outcomes

UNO W

@ Mississippi State 1-2

vsSoutheastern Louisiana W

vs South Carolina 3-0 (sweep)

vs Tulane W

@ Georgia 0-3

vs Florida 1-2

If we want to make the playoffs without winning the SEC tournament, we need to pick up at least 2 other wins.

The SEC, in particular, wasn't nearly as competitive in baseball when Skip was at LSU...although he is largely responsible for creating SEC prominence and driving the arms race that ensued.

probably not but everyone on his bench couldn’t freely transfer every year. Which probably helped

Yep I’ll say it was a Mulligan! Jay didn’t hit it past the ladies Tee! He should have to coach the first game next year with his weiner out

LSU baseball has become a victim of its own success. That being said, we're still pretty good most years

Not the same situation, but in ‘95 the Tigers had studs pitchers, along with Todd Walker and Russ Johnson’s junior year. LSU hosted a regional and Rice won 2 games and advanced to Omaha.

Fans stayed and clapped for the Tigers log after the final game was over.

It's apples and oranges.
It's not a fair comparison

The only one that would be comparable would be 1988

Walker and Johnson's career ended in 1994, in Omaha. (1992, 1993, 1994)

In 1995, LSU did host the regional as the 2 seed and lost twice to Rice, but Cal St Fullerton, the 1 seed, won the regional and went on to win the CWS title with Mark Kotsay.

You betcha. They creamed LSU in Alex Box; the second game LSU was the home team and lost 16-9

No, sir. Rice was the #3 seed in the six-team Baton Rouge Regional (there were eight host sites back then, with six teams each). Rice lost to #1 seed Cal State Fullerton, who advanced to Omaha. LSU was the #2 seed.

Completely different era now with nil and transfer portal,

More than that. No one gave a frick about baseball in the SEC besides Miss State. It’s why it’s such a rivalry. But Skip was unique in making lemonade out of lemons then got the support. The rest is history.

Mississippi State baseball is the most overrated shite of all time. They never even made the championship game/series until like 12 years ago.
