From what I understand and remember of that time, I believe this was much closer to happening than people think. I seem to recall that it was AFTER Saban's first year at Bama that he came closest to coming back to LSU. There were strong rumors that Miles was possibly (probably) going to leave for the Michigan job, and I recall that Saban was our top target if Miles left, and the feeling was mutual. Remember, Saban had a rough first season at Alabama....this was the season they lost to ULM, and they finished 7-6. Alabama fans were not exactly sold on him at that point.
And then somehow Miles decides NOT to go to Michigan, tells everyone to "have a GREAT day", we win the SEC Championship, and somehow as a 2 LOSS team we backpedaled into the BCS Champ Game. There was some dude on here at that time who had figured out how to calculate the BCS rankings before they were announced, so everyone on the board knew late that night that we would be playing in the ship....ALL IN ONE DAY. I literally woke up on that Saturday morning knowing that we lost out on the Nat Champ and we were losing our coach (who had two strong seasons), and the SEC Champ was basically meaningless. By the time I went to bed that night we were keeping our coach and were going to the natty. Absolutely the craziest day ever.
Those were good times. Long live the Mad Hatter.
This is the rumor I heard. Miles was going to Michigan and Herbstreit screwed it up by leaking it. If that would have happened Saban would have been back at LSU. Miles ended up winning the National Championship that year and the rest was history. Somehow Saban knew about Miles going to Michigan and reached out.

There was no opening at the time.

Pander. I agree. If you have kept up with this for 20+ years, it points to the bottom line. Skip.

Les from 2005 to 2012 was easily the best 8-year stretch in the history of LSU football.
It might be the second best 8 year stretch in the history of the sport.

He is on record saying his biggest mistake was leaving LSU but he went to Bama after realizing the NFL wasn’t for him and the LSU job wasn’t open

Not sure if he was ultimately responsible for making the decision to not hire Saban back, but Bertman absolutely could not stand the guy. That is fact.
And Bertman, for everything he did to build LSU baseball to everything it is today, was an absolute shite AD. He ruined the atmosphere at LSU basketball by pulling the students away from the floor and he killed LSU tailgating by charging for every lot that he could. Yeah, he was trying to make money too, but it was the end of the atmosphere that we were known for...now it's a shell of its former self.

I blame Drew Brees and Doctors in Miami...Culpepper or Brees...You make the call!!!

Not really. Saban left Miles a Ferrari and Les had that baby rev'd up in the mid-2000's. Also to be fair, Saban wasn't HIM yet at the time. He only had one title before leaving the NFL for Bama.
Exactly this 1000%
And in 2006, had they called PI in Auburn, we we’re potentially playing for NC that season as well

That was a rumor, but there is no definitive evidence to support that. Many LSU fans think he left for Alabama instead of the Dolphins. Speaking of rumors, I once heard that Dirk Koetter was almost hired before Les Miles. Ironic that they both played against each other in Miles first game.

In a biography about Saban,
I read it; great book.

said it here back in the day on this board that i would have taken saban over miles even after the 06 season
but
trant thought Miles was building something special here and that he would out win saban
that’s when i knew most of the posters were retarded

It was an outstanding book. And it didn't always make Saban look perfect. He had his issues.
Posted on 12/13/25 at 8:21 am to Geauxwylder
Miles was 22-4 his first 2 years with 2 top 5 finishes
message board losers may think that record sucks but I assure you people in the biz like Skip and Saban recognize it is not. While Saban may have expressed some regrets about leaving i seriously doubt he would have “inquired” given Miles record

From what I gathered through whom I believe to have been in the know- had Skip not been calling the shots at the time things would have turned out much differently with Saban at LSU

This sentiment is not shared enough. He also skimped on Pat Henry, running him off to A&M and the stupid camp money hire of Smoke Laval. Horrible AD.

Haha, yeah, that is true. Drew Brees and incompetent/overly cautious doctors in Miami played a part too! And Culpepper SUCKED in Miami

nah, he was definitely HIM even without those future national championships
if you didnt think he was about to go on GOAT run at bama then i don’t know what to tell you, it was inevitable once he got hired
