re: Did our 2024 Run Game suck, is Brad Davis terrible, or maybe we just didn't run enough?

I put it on the OC.. it's play calling and design of formations.. but hey we will see.. also the usual nuss gotta pull the ball on some of those RPOs

IMO, running alot of RPO where the QB has little to no chance of keeping the ball has a good bit to do with it.
This has to be a troll at this point

YAC is yards after contact. I hope you're not comparing our avg yards per rush to other teams yards after contact

If you consider 69.5% of those runs were on 2nd and 10.
Sloan is a complete idiot for this.

2 reasons:
never commit enough to the run
lack of run scheme creativity
That's your answers. Anyone can see a run coming a mile away from LSU and it never fools a defense either. Need more creativity in the runs scheme and also need to commit to it more when it's clear defense is collapsing to it.

Run game has sucked for years

Traps and pulls were slow developing, this gave the linebacker an advantage to close gaps and run to the ball down hill.

They were not physical enough !

Alex Atkins was creative in the run game for FSU hope he brings some of that juice here

I truly believe they need to hire a former player that used to play offensive line and was effective in a running offense. These young OC LIKE TO PASS PASS PASS!! Play smash mouth football own the line of scrimmage. If you don’t own the line of scrimmage you don’t win games!!!!

Run game didn’t look so bad once Hilton came to play at the end of the season and gave us a threat over the top. We lacked that the entire season up until that point.. say what you want, some of the weakest WR play we’ve had in a while as well.

BKs offense does better with a running qb.
The OL was not nearly as good as hoped at pushing people off the ball.
Davis’ rope should be very short at this point.

373 Rushing Attemps last year totaling just over 1500 yards. Avg run was 4.1 yards a carry. Those are SOLID numbers. UGA averaged 4.1 YAC UT Averaged 4.4 YAC Both playoff teams.
SEC rank - team - rushing yards per attempt
1. Tennessee - 5.03
2. Auburn - 4.92
3. Arkansas - 4.86
4. Texas A&M - 4.83
5. Alabama - 4.63
6. Ole Miss - 4.57
7. Florida - 4.55
8. South Carolina - 4.35
9. Texas - 4.33
10. Missouri - 4.13
T11. Georgia - 4.06
T11. LSU - 4.06
13. Mississippi State - 3.95
14. Kentucky - 3.94
15. Oklahoma - 3.87
16. Vanderbilt - 3.83
The teams you listed are in bold.
Here are the stats vs. SEC opponents:
T1. Alabama - 4.38
T1. Auburn - 4.38
3. Texas - 4.32
4. Texas A&M - 4.28
5. Tennessee - 4.25
6. Florida - 4.22
7. Arkansas - 4.03
8. South Carolina - 4.01
9. Mississippi State - 3.74
10. Ole Miss - 3.72
11. Missouri - 3.69
12. Georgia - 3.60
13. LSU - 3.59
14. Vanderbilt - 3.56
15. Kentucky - 3.24
16. Oklahoma - 3.14
So LSU tied for 11th in the SEC for yards per attempt, and was 13th in yards per attempt vs. conference opponents. No, those are not “SOLID numbers” despite the fact that UGA had similar production against one of the toughest schedules in the country.
quote:
How does this compare to let's say Ohio who won the Natty?
534 Rushes 2662 Yards 5.0 YAC
Ohio State… not Ohio. And there is a massive difference between 4.1 YPC and 5.0 YPC.
quote:
If you really dig into the numbers, all of the teams who had better YAC or more yards total, simply ran the ball more than we did.
Breaking: Teams who have successful rushing offenses tend to run the ball more. Other news at 10.
I think there were a lot of factors that led to our lack of rushing success:
- Losing Emery early
- Durham’s injury right when he hit his stride
- Dellinger’s injury later in the season
- Trying to be too multiple in our rushing attack early on (we started off running a lot of counter, power, inside zone, and outside zone out of a lot of different looks)
- Poor center play, which is a killer when you’re running counter/power with pulling OL
- OL who have almost exclusively run zone schemes their entire time at LSU trying to run gap schemes 50+% of the time (we went back to more zone as the season went on)
I don’t think it’s one thing in particular. At the same time, I think it’s a little silly to suggest that we would have been better if we just kept beating our heads against that wall. If you’re running for 4.06 ypc when you only run 40% of the time, you aren’t going to suddenly start getting 5 ypc by running 60% of the time. You’re going to be less effective, because defenses will be playing the run instead of the pass.

But I think it’s a BK thing in the trenches - his teams have never been known for imposing their wills along either line.
I don't know if this is really true, he had solid running games at Notre Dame. They were known for having good running games and playing good defense.

Say what you will about Les, but those guys were ready to run through literal brick walls for him and consistently broke the will of every team not coached by Saban.
This is definitely revisionist history.
Miles was constantly losing to less talented teams the last few seasons of his tenure.

He is definitely installing some new run concepts.
Carter on YouTube has put out some breakdowns on it.

We averaged 85 yards per game vs Bama, aTm, and Florida.
That is pathetic

The running scheme in 2024 sucked.
I don’t know if that’s fully on the OC or what but the style didn’t fit the personnel ,there was minimal creativity , and it was way too predictable.
You could flip on a high school game or any midweek non p5 college game and see a much better game plan for running the football than what lsu was doing.
If we fix that - Nuss is going to win the Heisman.

It's definitely on the OC. Everyone except our OC knew when the run was coming in. Felt like any 2nd and long situation was a guaranteed run. There was no creativity in the run game as well scheme wise. That combined with less opportunity to run and injuries at RB/OL and you had your results last year. JD absolutely opened the run game up for everyone else defenses were so keyed into him.
Quite honestly, run game has been underwhelming since BK has got here and the only person anyone respected so far on the run has been JD and those were not designed runs most of the time. I feel like Durham is poised to be a superstar. He played with foot injury last year that significantly slowed him down and he was still impressive. Oregon tried to poach him off LSU.
