If they can work that out... cool! If not, suit up and burn that stupid red-shirt. If he can get right, he won't need it.

At least using it now guarantees him an extra year should he need it

If he uses it now, he can't use it again. Let's say he uses his RS this year and gets hurt in another year, he just loses that year. If he doesn't use his RS this year, he still has another RS year to burn some time down the line. I'd actually want to keep that RS in my back pocket for the future if I'm Nussmeier

If he doesn't use his RS this year, this year counts against him and therefore only have 3 years left (with potential for 4 if using RS in the future) instead of 4 guaranteed going into next year. Having it in your back pocket instead of using it now doesn't grant him any extra time

Cause he had a coach and staff that put up with that shite and mentality and didn’t squash it in the first place.

It was essentially to try to retroactively fix what happened the Alabama game.

LSU wasn't even supposed to put up a fight in that game. Then, once the game started LSU found themselves with a VERY REAL chance to win the game. As the game went on that chance remained. But it was clear the thing holding LSU back was Johnson struggling. I bet if you asked Orgeron off the record he would say he really wanted to consider inserting Nussmeier to see if he could give the team just enough of a spark to pull off the massive upset. However, the decision had already been made by Nussmier that he wanted to redshirt this season. The fact that he was LSU's only scholarship back-up QB and that LSU still had 3 games left after the Alabama game, went into the decision not to give him a shot (which, as a player, I can't imagine having that mindset if your teammates are giving everything they have to try to pull off the upset and you, essentially, refuse to potentially help them do so).

I suspect after Nuss didn't play vs. Alabama and LSU realized the QB play was the biggest thing holding them back from a potential win in that game, the staff and Nussmeier decided to change course, making him now "available" for the Arkansas game. As we know, he played almost all of the game (not very well) and LSU still lost. Thus, with only two games remaining and no more "grace" period for the RS, he, again, decided to take the RS year and essentially declared himself "unavailable" for the remainder of the year.

The whole thing was illogical because Nuss was your backup QB all season. What is Johnson had to come out of the Alabama game due to injury? Was LSU just going to send in a walkon because they didn't want to burn Nuss's RS? Of course not. Nuss would have gone it. So if you would have readily played him in that set of circumstances, then why would you not play him if you felt he could help you win the game? It sounds like O and Nussmeier kind of had a "gentleman's agreement" after the bye week and most of the season was already over that, in order to make every effort to preserve Nuss's RS, O was not going to put him in the game unless Johnson had to come out due to injury. If you are Nussmeier the ONLY reason that decision is made is because you are thinking you may transfer after the season and you want to preserve your full eligibility in the event you ultimately choose to do so.

He would have 4 years to play 3 if he doesn't use the RS this year. Not sure why you're faceplaming my post. If he burns it this year and things don't work out for him down the line for whatever reason, he can't stop his playing time clock going forward. With very few elite players staying a full 5 years, having that RS year to burn is a luxury he won't have if he insists on using his RS this year. This isn't a one-way street regardless of what you want to believe. There are pros and cons to both

I think the NCAA should just allow the bowl to not count against red shirt eligibility.
If I'm remembering correctly that was the original plan before going to 4 games in a year.

I have no guesses what the NCAA would do on this one. But I would argue, if I was a school (i.e. LSU in this case), that if players can sit out bowl games with no penalty, not that I can think of a good penalty- that's beside the point, that the reverse should be true and a freshman should be allowed to play with no penalty also.

That's how I see it, and how I would argue it.

It is worth pointing out that you can redshirt any year, not just your freshman year. The rule is 5 to play 4. It does not specify what years. So, for example, if we were to bring in a transfer QB for next year Nuss could theoretically redshirt next year.

And if the idea of transferring in the future is on his dad's mind- a bowl game is a good place to increase your marketability.

Because he would have 4 guaranteed years left if he took the RS this year. He doesn't gain anything extra by saving it for the future or using it now, using it now already extends his eligibility period to the fullest. In fact it could bite him in the arse if he gets injured after 4 games down the line and wouldn't be able to use that RS he saved, but had he used it now he it wouldn't matter.

It's just not smart to maintain your RS status all the way until this point and decide to not use it. No one is a fortune teller and many people have benefited from the RS year, might as well use it when you can especially at this juncture.

Makes no sense. Nuss was ready to burn the redshirt only 2 games ago but now doesn’t want to play a whole bowl game with both other qbs in the portal. The starting job is his for the taking and he’s worried about a redshirt year now?

Each of these QBs is scared of the next QB coming in and taking his opportunity. This is a problem.

This shite is why people were mad about Johnson leaving. He knew O wasn’t being retained in October, and that Nuss withdrew from QB comp to preserve redshirt

He knew during the season that he wasn’t coming back, he should have let Nuss take the reigns.

Can Nussmeier still practice with the team? I believe he can so he should still be getting significant reps in practices While the NCAA is not known for speed, hope they can render a decision this week. What about Emery, is he gonna be eligible?

I mean other than playoff games aren't bowl games considered exhibition games anyway? So why should they count?

Or at minimum he is considering the possibility of leaving.

It is absurd how many people on this thread dont realize that every QB that comes through the door has considered his exit strategy if needed. Nice guys finish last.

Nuss already flunked his opportunity to be starter over Max. So why is this situation any different than that game. Even if he starts the Bowl game and wins the QB job will wide open to all comers in the fall.
I fault that cuck, MJ, for putting us in that spot anyway...

Not for lsu but it’s a whole year of eligibility when he inevitably transfers.
