Maravich also had higher career APG and RPG than Davis.

This kid puts it up nearly 32 times a game (total FG attempts). To further the OP's point, Davis has made 1219 of 2987 2pt shots. Pete made 1387 of 3166. He would need to make 168 of his next 179 attempts just to match Pete. Let that sink in. Pete was the man. End of story.

A whopping 6.5 shots a game.

The Detroit dude is not even comparable to Maravich. It's like spotting someone a two mile head start in a three mile race. If you win, so what.

Pete still shot the ball more that this guy so that’s a variable to measure as well.

Defenses knew this and STILL Pete scored at will

Speaking of 3 pointers, do y’all remember the kid from Oakland University that only shot threes. He had something like 214 FGA and all were 3 pt attempts. Crazy stat.

Not at all. People will still be talking about the Pistol 50 years from now. Davis will be an afterthought.

It is 2 seasons. Davis is a 5th year player because of COVID.

I’d like to hear how many points Pete would have had if they counted the points from the would be 3’s and recalculate and what his points would be today.

Pistol would put on a show, every now and then, a shot from around half court. A hook shot from way out, that was a thing of beauty!

To watch the Pistol, a treat.

I don't think we can trust that old story about Dale Brown (or his staff) charting every one of Maravich's games and concluding that he would have averaged 57 points (or whatever Dale says). Did they even keep a shot chart in those days? And if so, without the three-point arc, did they imagine one?

Here's what we should know, though:
Some of us were contemporaries of Maravich. We saw him play at the old cow palace. He was a fierce competitor who battled through double and sometimes triple teams.
And if there had been a 3-point line painted on the floor, I am convinced Pete would have taken MOST of his shots from beyond it.
So who dares to guess what his scoring average could have been?

Just missed him at LSU, but did get to see him play a lot with the Jazz.

The Jazz used to have $1.50 Terrace seats and we (Me and my Mandeville HS buddies) drove across the Causeway on a regular basis to see Maravich and the Jazz.

Pete was 4-5” taller than this kid too. LSU should force the NCAA to count his freshman year and made 3’s plus average in the potential foul shots of 3 vs 2. He was a 90% FT shooter.

Just the sort of thing Brown would waste time on instead of scouting an opponent or something. Knucklehead!

I think Dale watched a few games on video and came up with those numbers. Not shot charts. And he talked about Pete not even knowing where the line would be and probably would’ve shot way more from long range if he did. So I think he watched 1-2 games and extrapolated from there.

When Pete played, in addition to no 3 point shot, there was also no shot clock. There was one team in the SEC that liked to slow the game down (Auburn maybe?). I don't remember the final score, but it was something like 12 to 8.
