Convince Me That The Overall Talent On Defense Is The Worst In The History Of Our Program

I'm sorry but I don't think this group, as a collective, is this historically bad. Yes, I know what the stats say, but with a half decent coaching staff, they would not be this bad. There is way too much talent there. We have solid guys at each level. Yes, we are lacking in the secondary, but with a pressure scheme or something somewhat creative, they could be middle-third defense in CFB.

We need something like what happened in 2021 when the DC was fired and we ran the Cover Zero scheme with great success. I know we ran one play out of Cover Zero last night and we actually stopped them on 4th down with pressure. One of the few times all year we did it.

I just refuse to believe these guys are that bad. Convince me they are. I'm begging someone to.

The secondary is probably the least talented defensive unit we’ve had since the 90’s.

But yeah our scheme also sucks. Also the position/discipline coaching is terrible. Even when the scheme is ok individual players continually frick up by not setting the edge or not knowing the coverage.

Finally we’re the worst tackling team I’ve ever seen. Whatever we’re doing in the S&C dept and off season preparation is not working. I know Kelly came in and decided to rework all that….and it’s been an abject failure

House, Cooks, and "What's his name" safeties coach need to hot the bricks. We gave up almost 300 yards more than Tulane!

Aggressive cover zero requires your DL to collapse the pocket and bullrush. We aren't getting a noticeable push with 9 in the box. A team like Bama would pre-motion the hell out of you and gash you. But anything is better than this current vision underneath zone bullshite I guess. At least go down swinging like a 90's basketball on turf Big 12 team like Texas Tech.

Almost stopped reading here, but…

This is probably true.

That’s my philosophy too. I’d rather go down swinging than just go down. We just let them do what they want.

It might be three issues most likely , 1. Talent is obviously not top notch 2. Inexperience and all that entails and 3. Lack of ability to understand the scheme by new players - this might explain why we are so basic on defense , House did great last year , I doubt he forgot how to call a defense . But if the players he has to work with can’t pick up the scheme then he’s forced to keep things very simple .

D-Line is azz!

Alabama held OM to 10 points and had instant pressure without the blitz.

This front just isn't good. Secondary is complete and utter trash.

We were sold fools gold!

when you have two 5 star defensive players out of high school getting bullied game in and game out that kind of gives a sense of how overrated our talent is

Bama also has competent coaching on defense and a HC where defense is his specialty.

I have no doubt Sabans staff could take these same players and not set SEC records for incompetence.

When I’ve heard the “failure to execute” excuse previously, that’s meant the team doesn’t have the personnel to run the coordinator’s scheme, and the coordinator isn’t going to tailor anything to the personnel he has. Think “drop linebacker”.

Get ready for a long season.

What is worse is we made this scheme and tailored to supposedly help our best players. What a complete and total failure.

Not the worst.
But zero speed for edge containment.
No standout linebackers.
Horrible play calling for secondary.
Lots of guys watching opposing players run past them with the ball.

70% blue chip rate on D including 3 5* and a couple more top 100 players
If you go by recruiting rankings the D is more talented than the Offense

Ain't no way they shouldn't be at least a top 50 defense

It is a poorly coached group with very limited talent.

So the coaching IS worse than I thought.

We are about to waste what will be another historical offense with this garbage. If a decent coach was here and had them in the top 50, LSU is likely unbeaten today.

Don't get me started on how bad this guy is in the second half. It is almost like they tell the defense in the second half to just take the rest of the game off.

This is why relying in the portal for practically complete revamping of an entire position group (DB’s) isn’t a good idea. This group has to play together and off each other and have constant communication. That’s just damn hard to do with never playing with each other.

Cooks is the safety coach

It’s both.

Our secondary is a combination of very young and not so talented.

I like our talent at LB but I dont love who we’re playing. But again, our best talent is a Tr Frehsmen and a position less Sophomore

Jack- Ovie is deeply untalented. Swinson looks better but still isn’t great. would be a great backup to a good Jack LB

DL- Smith is not 100%. Jones is bad. Wingo is a rare bright spot but can’t do too much on his own. Jefferson looks good too. Womack looks good but isn’t playing.

So that’s the talent situation. most of our high end potential guys are in their first 1-2 years of college. We have some people who in a good year may play dime.

and then on top of that I think we have coaching issues. Not knowing how to use Perkins. playing guys like Speights, Ovie and Jones. The amount of cushion our CBs play with is insane.

There is a difference between talent and experience. We have a number of top 100 talents in the secondary including multiple 5 stars.
