Controversial Opinion: Albert Belle was the best MLB player to come through LSU

3 straight seasons out of 4 of over 48 home runs, 50 home runs on one of them. 8 straight seasons of over 30 home runs. No other LSU player has ever put up his numbers in the MLB. The stretch from 1994 to 1998 was insane. Would've finished easily with over 500 home runs had he not retired at 33 from osteoarthritis. Lifetime near .300 hitter, 381 homers, 1,250 RBIs and retired at 33 years of age.
I'm not saying Dylan Crews or Paul Skenes couldn't eclipse him. There just isn't another LSU player that went to the MLB and put up anything close to Belle.
His 1994-98 stretch is easily 1st ballot hall of fame no question.
1994, 106 games played: .357 avg 36 home runs (only 106 games played, on track for 55 home runs) 101 RBIs (on track for 155 RBIs)
1995: .317 avg 50 home runs 126 RBIs
1996: .311 avg 48 home runs 148 RBIs
1997: traded to white sox, down year .274 avg 30 HRs 116 RBIs
1998: .328 avg 49 home runs 152 RBIs
To those saying, it was easier then, no it wasn't. MLB homers have increased. Last year, MLB averaged 1.21 homer per team per game. In the mid 90s, it was 1.00 homers per team per game. It's able to be searched.

I don't think that's controversial at all.

How is that controversial?

That's a pretty well known fact around here. Not many people will debate that.

Numbers don’t lie. Not controversial!

Pretty sure this is generally accepted as true by both LSU and non-LSU fans. Nothing controversial about that take at all.

Downvoting because that is one of the least controversial opinions this board has ever seen

Not controversial. However I tend to think Alvin Dark should be a hall of famer and I don’t think Albert Belle should be.

No argument here. DJ Lamahieu has a really nice resume, too.

If Belle played nice in the sandbox, he’d be in the Hall! Phenomenal bat speed and power. Guy could hit the ball a mile.

I don’t know if he is the best but he could swing the hell of a bat and a two by four

I remember watching Joey hit them to the married student housing at LSU.

The fact is that it DID get him. There are all kinds of guys who never accomplished what they could have because of health issues. Chad Jones is an example. Luckily Belle got two thirds of a career in before his health got him. Jones got zero in.
There is always misunderstanding in these discussions. What do we mean by “best”. Do you mean the guy who you’d take for one season? Or is the guy who had the best career? If the former, Belle is the answer. If it’s the latter, a guy like D.J. LeMahieu is hard to beat.

Belle also didn't get in a major car accident prior to starting his career

the ball just left his bat differently from any other player I've ever seen.
