Cole Cubelic brought up an interesting stat: Run Game related

Last year, we ran the ball on consecutive plays 26 times throughout the entire season. It’s been about the same this year.
We’ve beaten the dead horse about our ability to run block, but we aren’t giving our guys a chance to get any momentum in the run game either.
Also his podcasts and film room episodes are pretty good. Even if he is an Auburn guy

How many times have we done so this year? Did he say?
Why am I being downvoted for asking a follow up question
I didn't mean to sound snarky if that's how it came across

I don’t remember him saying it in the episode, honestly I may go back and count it up tonight if I get bored enough. It was the Week 3 film room episode if anybody wants to listen

Over the season, I edited the original post. My bad about any confusion

So it doesn't work the first 26 to 28 times, but will work on times 29 through 38. I disagree with Cole and have heard what he's said.

He’s saying, we ran back-to-back running plays on 26 separate occasions last year.

That's because Sloan is not a very good "play caller". He doesn't set up plays at all. As an offensive play caller, you have to think about the plays that you want to run 2 or 3 plays ahead of time, then set up those plays accordingly.
He's terrible at that. He goes by down and distance everytime, not looking 2 or 3 plays ahead. He will never out smart a DC in the SEC, maybe the sunbelt, but La Tech's DC ate his lunch.

If you cant run, you shouldnt call run plays

We are still a pass-first team but we are running more than we did last year (~46% in 2025 vs. ~41% in 2024).
Also..

Maybe I’m just not clear on what this means, but in the Clemson game alone I count 10 rushes that came after a rush on the previous play (not counting change of possession). 12 in the La Tech game. 7 in the Florida game. That’s 29 through 3 games..

It’s jarring that so many people needed this explanation spoon fed to them.

I wonder how this compares to CFB and P4 teams across the board.
1) I’d expect modern era of the sport to be much higher % of pass plays called than 5, 10, 15, etc years ago.
2) I’d also expect having an experienced, pro prospect at QB helm, which we undoubtably had last year and continue to have this year despite current offensive struggles, inherently bumps out pass play % higher than the norm.

Not that interesting a stat and has nothing to do with getting "momentum" in the run game. Back-to-back run plays are vastly more likely to happen when the first run is a success. If you get 5-6 yards on a 1st down rush, you do it again (obviously). If you get stopped at the line on 1st down (like LSU), you're gonna want to throw the ball on 2nd.

In 2025, LSU is #27 in pass play % at 56.06%. For comparison, #1 is Duke at 66.19% and #136 is Navy at 14.50% (the triple option and academy schools comprise the bottom group by a wide margin).
In 2024, LSU was #8 at 59.21%. #1 was San Jose St at 64.42%.
In 2023, LSU was #43 at 51.03%.
While this doesn’t measure Cole’s point re: frequency of consecutive run plays called, it does show we are clearly well above the norm. What it also shows, to me at least, is it’s extremely personnel driven. While Denbrock was calling plays in 2023, LSU still under Kelly was much more balanced bc who our QB was. I expect us to want to throw the ball more in 2024 and 2025 bc of personnel-based reasons. Our best offensive weapon is our collective WR group. We have to continue making an effort to get them ball so they can make plays. I’m pretty sure most every fan is for that.

So, you want LSU to pass everydown?
Has there ever been a team that passed on every down because they "can't run the ball".
That's ridiculous.

This is simply not true. He will run the ball on 2nd down no matter the distance. He doesn’t care if it’s 2nd and 20

quote:yeah this seems more the norm. Running it only 26 times in back to back situations over the entire 2024 season seems way waaay too low.

I don't believe that he runs on every 2nd down. He's bad, but not that bad.
The times you might see him running on a long distance yardage play is that he "thinks" he's outsmarting the DC by running.
My problem with him is that he doesn't set up for "big plays".
