Those of you that think that Coastal is just some pushover mid-major and that LSU is gonna steamroll them after they kiss our rings, yall are gonna be in for a rude awakening. frick the history (or lack-thereof) , none of that is relevant. They’re a good team that could very well beat LSU

If things get hairy I suspect this place will be in full meltdown mode, and only because of its delusional expectations of how this series will go. It could be a dogfight

Don't be ridiculous. That would be wrong.

It's obviously "CHANT-a-clears".

Or, maybe it's "CHAN-ticklers"!

What would that winning percentage be if he played in the SEC?

They have a good win % in this tournament.

We should ask Sullivan from Florida to sit in the first row just get inside this guy's head. He's big mad at Sully for yelling at the field crew in the regionals

Are you going to provide some facts to refute what he said or are you just going to be pissed that he’s confident in his team/program?

I’ll take a crack at it. Let’s review the claim:
quote:

Coastal Carolina the past century, only eight teams have made the regionals more than us. During that same period we have the sixth-best win percentage and the ninth-most wins. This is not a Cinderella story. We're one of the most premier, most successful college baseball programs in the entire country.

They don’t even crack the top 40 for regional appearances over the past century, so let’s assume he means since 2000. I’ll use the super regional era (1999 to present) since that makes it a lot easier to find stats.

Number of super regional appearances is a good, easy metric. Premier programs finish in the top 16 a lot, right? Coastal Carolina has 4. That puts them outside of the top 30 (at least) nationally over the time period.

How about CWS appearances? Coastal Carolina has 2 in the super regional era. That puts them outside of the top ~27 (again, at least) nationally over the time period.

They do have a CWS championship in that era. That’s the one stat in favor of his argument; they are tied for #7 (along with 10 other teams) nationally in that respect.

I don’t think their win% or total wins in the Sun Belt are really relevant to the argument. The other 13 teams in the conference have a total of 7 super regional appearances and 2 CWS appearances in 27 years. I also don’t really care that he’s tied with umpteen other teams for 9th most regional appearances since 2000.

Their most legitimate argument for being “one of the most premier, most successful college baseball programs in the entire country” effectively boils down to being somewhere in the top 18 most national championships over that period… because of a “Cinderella” run in 2016.

They’re a good team. Don’t get me wrong. But his statement about being a premier program is a stretch. If they come out and beat LSU 2/3 this weekend, then he’ll have an argument.

Ok. So what from what he said did he lie about?

You think a team can be "one of the most premier, most successful college baseball programs in the entire country" with 4 total Super Regional appearances in their entire history?

Honestly we can think what we want. We're just fans. I'm sure the team and Jay are taking them VERY seriously.

Coastal has Little Man's Syndrome.
They're going to talk big and try to throw a flurry of air punches.

Yes, they've won a bunch of games in a row. I'd say half of them are against teams that would finish last in the SEC.

People don't disrespect Coastal Carolina. Everyone knows they have a quality program. If their coach thinks LSU is going to take them lightly, he's creating a false narrative for his team.

Ehh it’s just coach speak.

What is he supposed to say they’re lucky to be there? How is Coastal going to pull top talent from the SEC if he acts like they don’t belong among the elite programs… they’ve been to regionals as many times as LSU has so far this century. I tip my hat to them, theyre the best baseball program outside of the power conferences. Having said that I hope we punch them in the mouth for stealing even just 1 Omaha appearance away from us.

Also he has as many national championships with Coastal Carolina as Vitello has with Tennessee and more than DVH does at Arkansas

Yeah. So embarrassing that we got more teams to Omaha than any other conference.

Not sure what you’re laughing about. They’ll “pitch off” and we won’t see the ace except for a potential game 3.

Wait…they have their rotation set, and you think they’ll pitch off for games 1 and 2 and save their ace for a game that may not happen? You honestly think a team would lose game 1 and decide to not use their available ace for game 2?

When he says "past century", does he actually mean 100 years, or just this century? If he means the latter, that is really poorly worded. Nobody cares about a mid major winning percentage over a 25 year span. If you want to be considered elite, you better prove it against better competition. They did it one year, and that was nearly a decade ago. Rice once was what Coastal is now, and frankly better. But then they fell off the map. You gotta sustain something above regular season success if you want people to put you in another category.
