And he isn’t good at calling football play by play. He just isn’t. Very hard to follow the game. I don’t care if he is enthusiastic or not as long i I know what is going on each play. I’ll get enthusiastic when we do big things even if he isn’t as long as he tells me what is happening.

Circumstances were such that I had to listen to the Arkansas game last year.
I was unimpressed to the point of disappointment in his call. I wish that wasn't the case.
Pretty sure I started a thread about it or at least commented on another one.
Hawthorne was always OK by me but I found that him calling basketball - even when I was watching the game - was just short of unbearable.

How can you get an SEC job - LSU no less - and sound like you aren't excited about the game you are describing?
Hmmm... I wonder if he's read any writing on the wall.

I like Chris Blair in general, but he is not good with football. My complaint with Hawthorne was that he made every play seem like more than it was, but I realize he created a visual. Chris Blair doesn’t speak to allow the visual. I listened to my first game on radio Saturday (2nd half) and it was really tough to follow. Disappointing.
I do like Blair for baseball as long as he is with someone who knows the game

He’s pathetic. Has been from day one.

Never liked him for football. His 20-15-10-5-4-3-2-1 and "Touchdown Fighting Tigers" are corny. We need a homer.

Chiming in late here, but my gripe with Blair has always been that his voice isn't distinctive enough.
On the occasions that I have to tune into the radio to find the game, his broadcast sounds like every other college broadcaster out there. With Hawthorne, you heard that voice and knew you had the LSU Sports Network.
Anyway, not to poop on the guy too much. I think his play by play is decent, and he's definitely not a "fan" in the booth, although he could at least fake it a little for the dollars he's getting.

Blair has about as much enthusiasm as the dry eye guy commercials

That was far from his best game but his excuse can be that his enthusiasm on scoring plays was tempered by penalty flags laying on the ground even though they ended up being on the other team.

That really is some shitty play calling. No emotion no care it seems.

Don’t complain about Blair until after you listen to a Saints broadcast.
Blair is great!
Blair is great!

I haven’t listened to a radio game ever since all the games are in TV. Man I remember those nights huddled around a radio and a bbq grill listening to the game with a waft of meat and charcoal and the sweet aroma of bourbon.
I may need to do that one night, but I got great parking passes so it’ll have to be an away game. But y’all saying Blair isn’t good?

Chris Blair is no John Ferguson.
In his prime, Ferguson was the best of the bunch.
I haven't heard Blair that much, because if I listen to the radio broadcast, I have to hear that god awful recorded music blasting in the background and I refuse to subject myself to the annoyance.

We’re back to being a pretty good football team when we’re bitching about the play by play guy again. The good ol days.

I like Chris, but his football games blow — they just do.
He had zero give a damn throughout the literal greatest college football season of all time. You think he will for an unranked matchup vs Auburn? The dude is obviously not a huge CFB guy.
Look no further than national broadcasts for proof you don’t have to be an LSU homer to have fun commentating over close football games.
ETA:
I actually forgot about this — convinced the Blair sympathizers are just really friendly people who forgot how bad the football broadcasts actually are because they, like me, stopped listening a long time ago.

LSU had a chance to hire one, but they left him on womens basketball and softball and went for the out-of-towner instead. At least when I listen to womens games, I have no doubt who he is rooting for and it makes it more enjoyable

I never have been a Chris Blair fan. He just sounds fake to me.

I grew up listening to John Ferguson. He had his faults too. “Two play late John”. LOL.
He would go to a Commercial for Texaco and it would be LSU’s ball on its own 30 and while he was doing the commercial you would hear the crowd roar in the background. He would come back and it would be LSU’s ball 1st and goal and he would just pick up the action with little or no explanation of what happened.
However, you always knew John Ferguson was pro LSU. No doubt.
