Exactly. Hawthorne and Blair are different announcers. Blair at least gets the right call, and he's had some pretty great calls.

Hawthorne would have told everyone that Milazzo hit the game winner last night. I grew up listening to Hawthorne, and will always remember some of those calls, but every game winning HR call sounded the same with Jim.

He likes to harp on stats like "6th homerun of the year" and what not when thats not really important in the moment at all. Did it for tommy whites walk off in omaha last year as well.

I'll say his Tommy White CWS call was pretty great.

I know it may seem blasphemous but Blair is a much better announcer than Hawthorn. Hawthorn was emotional but his facts were typically very shaky.

I did enjoy how brazenly disgusted he was by the clown show umpire nonsense

I mean, did anyone expect Milam to hit a HR right there? It's not like it was White or Jones up there. Hitting what was only his 6th homerun of the year right there--to win the game--is big. He's not a HR hitter, but he did it right there.

To me, someone who appreciates stats, that made it even bigger. That's not a guy I expected to win a game on a HR.

Besides, what is arguably Hawthorne's most iconic call, the Warren Morris HR, includes him pointing out that it's Warren's first homerun of the year...

I was disappointed when someone shared the video of it and Doug Thompson wasn't there to run off after the HR...

Him running off on the Tanks HR against Wake last year was amazing (and also a great call from Blair).

5:09:30 is the call

id love to see it overlayed with the video to see at what point he finally realizes it was a HR.

I knew about that bat with about 95% certainty

I don't think many of us expected Milam to crush it. He's hit a lot of deep shots that end up getting caught before the warning track.

Bottom line is Blair is not fit for baseball commentating. Keep him on football and LSU Athletics history podcasts.

I think his power stopped being "sneaky" a few weeks ago. He's hit a few no-doubters since that. The pitcher left that ball up and he tattooed it, with a ton of back spin. Ball was very clearly going far

Harry carry had horrendous calls on HRs and balls he thought were HR that weren't even close quite often in the latter part of his career but he built enough trust with his audience being a bud man and cub fan that he got lots of grace.

What a great call by Blair! He built the momentum from the swing and hit the crescendo when the ball left the ballpark. A classic call. Thanks for sharing. You wanted him to sound surprised, because all of us were surprised as well, including the TV announcers. A classic call from a new LSU legend. Thanks Chris Blair. We are proud of you. You let the hit take the stage and didn't clutter it up with a bad overlay of announcing

Blair grew up in Kentucky.

I think his call of Milam's HR was excellent. Blair is far superior to Hawthorne in every sport, IMO.

I promise you Milam and Jay were already celebrating together before any of the listeners knew what happened.

This. I was listening in the radio and it literally sounded like a pop fly. He made a fly ball to the warning track sound like a 450 foot hr yesterday
