I am really excited to have a true DC at LSU that really understands what it is like week in and week out in the SEC, something we just did not have in 2008.

a. this is a positive for chavis

b. malleveto had been on the staff for years. they knew the SEC well. they just sucked

the question is going to be if chavis is going to adjust his D for our opponents. he always sucked at this at UTenn

what did florida win that year?

What does that matter. The thread is about Chavis vs. FLA. And in 2007 FLA kicked chavis arse!!!!!

"The Defensive Backfield saw a slew of injuries and changes. The season started with Jonathan Hefney and Jerod Parrish at safety, while Antonio Gaines and Marsalous Johnson started at cornerback. However, only Hefney retained his spot, as injury and impressive play allowed Freshmen Eric Berry, Brent Vinson and Dennis Rogan to emerge for the unit. Junior College transfer DeAngelo Willingham also saw significant time."

UCLA tore him a new one in the season opener. UCLA sucks

My recollection of that game was UThug's offense had plenty of scoring opportunities, but could not cash in. Their defense was on the field much of the game, allowing UCLA to gradually both get back in the game, then ultimately win.

Word is the Chief is excited about having more talent to work with at LSU than during much of his time in Knoxville, so I look for good things from the Tiger D this season.

On the 1st possession of the game in the steamy Swamp, the Tennessee Volunteers went three and out. On the ensuing punt, Brandon James took the return 83 yards for Gator touchdown. Things never did get much better for the visiting team, as Florida rolled to an impressive 59-20 victory in the SEC opener for both teams.

There was, however, a brief period when it seemed that the contest would be much closer. The Gators ran out to a 28-6 lead by late in the 2nd quarter on two Tim Tebow touchdown passes and a Tebow touchdown run, along with the opening punt return. But then Tennessee QB Erik Ainge got his team's offense moving, throwing a touchdown pass just before halftime to cut the lead to 28-13 at intermission.

The Gators mounted a long drive to start the second half, but freshman Volunteer cornerback Eric Berry picked off a Tim Tebow pass (his first interception thrown in 2007) and returned it 93 yards for another Tennessee touchdown. When Florida's next drive ended in a punt, UT had the ball down only eight, 28-20.

But on the first play of the possession, Erik Ainge's handoff to running back Arian Foster was mishandled, and Gator linebacker Dustin Doe scooped up the loose ball and took it into the endzone for a Florida touchdown. Tennessee's momentum was washed away by the roar of 90,000 Gator fans, and the home team never looked back.

Florida would end the game with 31 straight points, turning a close game into a runaway.

Several Gators had excellent afternoons. Tim Tebow finished 14-19 passing for 299 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT and rushed for 62 yards and 2 more TDs. Receiver Percy Harvin excelled as well, leading all players in rushing (9 attempts for 75 yards and 1 TD) and receiving (4 catches for 120 yards). The Florida offense rolled up 556 yards of total offense, 255 on the ground. Meanwhile, the Gator defense also did its part, holding Tennessee to just 38 yards rushing with no first downs on the ground and 293 yards total offense.[22]

Overall, the Gators put together a historically dominating performance. Their 59 points scored was the second-highest total in the history of the series (behind only UF's 62 in the 1995 contest), and the 39 point margin of defeat was the Vols' most lopsided loss to any opponent since 1981.[23] After the game, Tennessee still led the overall series by a narrow 19-18 margin.[24]

I hhope he'e not an old SEC fossil like Fulmer was. Things have changed dramatically in the SEC,
is Chavis "madd scientist" enough to keep up? I don't know, this is why I pose the question.

last year tebow was 8/15 for 96 yrds and 2 tds, no uf rb ran for over 55 yrds against tennessee. their offense was held to 243 total yards and 2 tds. the final score was 30-6. 14 points by td, 9 pts hy fg's and one td by a brandon james punt return. he did a good job against uf last year, in 07 not so much. his defense was good enough for tennesse to win the east in 07 and held our offense to one td in the sec championship. i think we are in good shape with the new defensive staff.

Certainly, but everyone did that year. Chavis overall has done great against Urban's spread

2005: 16 points allowed
2006: 21 points allowed
2007: 59 points allowed (terrible)
2008: 30 points allowed (skewed due to 1 punt return for TD, 1 yard FG drive and 2 other TD drives that started in UT territory)

Come on man. Let's start doing some research before posting on here. In that game UCLA had 288 total yards. They ran the ball 31 times for 29 yards (.9 yards per carry). UT also picked off UCLA's QB 4 times. If that is 'tearing a defense a new one' then I hope we get 'torn a new one' each week.

How well has Chavis' defense At Tenn. done against the Florida offense?

a lot better than Pelini's defense was against Arizona State and/or Rick Clausen.

yes, outstanding point PJ, practice and game planning are not important and are in fact unnecessary. Neither is playing other games. And only a bunch of pussies would let any events going on distract them.

I am glad you can quantify the effect of a hurricane on a defense and use that formula to mitigate shitty schemes.

The players came out and said that they sat Pelini down and talked to him about problems they had with his schemes.

ASU Maybe, BUT NO excuses for the TENN game. They had the game at halftime and blew it. Remember that TENN flew in the day of the game. NOT EASY!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it's safe to say that he did better against Fla. than LSU did.

People always say this. In 2001 the man had Albert Haynesworth, and John Henderson right next to each other, and couldn't stop LSU and the QB draw.

Tennessee's 2001 defense was loaded.

And Chavis got plenty of grief from us as LSU fans over never adjusting to basically the same play over and over as Mauck was ineffective passing that game.

Chavis is not the second coming but he is a solid and experienced SEC DC. And a definite upgrade over the mistake made last year.

Fixed? I hope. Better? definitely.

Agreed. But Chavis had enough talent at Tenn that he should never, ever have been blown out.
