But Chavis had enough talent at Tenn that he should never, ever have been blown out
No such thing. Even with all the talent he had amassed through his amazing recruiting, a defensive coach as good as Saban still managed to get blown out by Georgia.

You hope that it's rare, but it's always a possibility.

I noticed your posts on the qb article,, it amazes me how opinions can vary that much.
Some people are very one sided on this issue and seems to me you as well as myself has the most logical unbiased view there is.
Its nice to know we have fans like that.

King Joey - I stand corrected. You're are right. I was probably over-reacting a bit to the sentiment that excuses Chavis's poor years at Tenn to lack of talent.

But I wonder if the blow-outs given up by Chavis were in the same vein as the '04 UGA game. I mean in that game Greene making miracle throw after throw and his receivers were making catch-after-catch. It wasn't bad coverage. And Hester fumbled (how often did that ever happen?). And Carter downed the ball on our 1 yd line. And worst of all Jimbo was OC'g.

I would imagine some of them were and some of them weren't. That '04 UGA game wasn't our only blowout. Va. Tech, Bama and Auburn all crushed us in '02. And a just above average Florida team embarassed us pretty badly in Tiger Stadium in '03, and that was a PHENOMENAL defense.

I haven't watched Chavis' defenses very closely over the years, but whenever I have been watching Tennessee over the years I recall that I tended to be impressed with their defense more often than not.

I would imagine that even with all the talent we have on defense now, there could be games where everything shakes out just wrong and we give up a bunch of points, yards, etc. We just have to hope that it is a rare occurrence, and that as often as possible they come on nights where our offense is clicking enough to produce even more points than our defense gives up.
