Can someone please explain to me why the state of Tennessee is so devoid of high school football talent? It's a pretty big state population-wise AFA the SEC goes.

You'd think they'd have at least as much talent Mississippi, or at least close to Alabama, given they have more population than either of those states.

let me take a stab..

black population by percentage:

Tennessee - 17

Louisiana - 32

Alabama - 27

Mississippi - 37

If everyone will only slow down a little, you are trying to compare a coaching staff that had problems over there for the last 5-7 years. It was just a matter of time before the wheels would come off the wagon. I believe that if Chavis was not a good DC he would not have lasted as long as he did. So lets give the man a chance before we go trying to figure why he is here insted of whoever and watch what happens. There is nothing going to happen between now and then that is going to change things now. We have what we have. Lets pull for the Tigers and support the players and the coaching staff. Then if they do not work out right then we will move on and get someone else.

We will win this year it is just a matter of by how much, we may also lose a game or two but I personaly do not think so, but, that is my opinion. Everyone has one, they come a dime a dozen. We are not in a posistion to chage things, if we where we would not be on here saying what we think.

LSU 12-0 then we will se what happens from there!

I dont think Chavis is overwhelmed because the talent is so much better at LSU than TN. But the flipside to that coin is that he had a hand in developing all of TN's talent.

Pelini fielded some overall impressive D's at Nebraska and LSU. However, even in his best years he had a few games where it looked like he didnt have a clue.

To me, Chavis was like that at TN. So I think of Pelini and Chavis as comparable. And with Crowton as OC, PElini contributed to a MNC team. I think Chavis is capable of the same.

I dont think that Chavis will come in and produce a defense like 2003. But he is capable of coaching a defense that, combined with an O that can put up some points, can win championships.

they fell in recruiting for 2 reasons

VA and SC are a couple other states they used to hit pretty tough that I'd imagine haven't been as good to em since SC and VT have gotten better

i think chavis is a better dc, but bo was good enough for us to win an nc. also imo, bo's defense took a HUGE hit when dunbar left. les did a poor job replacing dunbar with lane and it showed. haley+cooper+chavis is big time imo.

John Henderson, Albert Haynesworth, Rashad Moore, Aubrayo Franklin, Will Overstreet, Demetrin Veal, Kevin Burnett, Keyon Whiteside, Eddie Moore, Jabari Greer, Julian Battle, Andre Lott and Rashad Baker..We can't stop the quarterback draw after knocking out Rohan Davey and the starting tailback..Matt Mauck comes in a runs the quarterback draw over and over and Chavis says "We weren't prepared for it"..

Chavis is an excellent lb's coach.. He turned out great lb's at UT. But his system at times will drive you bonkers. He plays the same scheme against everybody he plays.. When he has a PRO BOWL caliber front 7 he really gets after the quarterback and you will find it hard to line up and get a 100 yards rushing against Chavis. but when it comes to 3rd and long..That is where Chavis makes you wanna scream..You never EVER see a Db running stride for stride and looking back for the ball, and they always give a HUGE CUSHION. no matter who the db's are or who the db coach is..CHAVIS plays his db's that way. In the UCLA game last year Norm Chow said if it was close he knew he could get yardage underneath the coverage because Chavis would back off...

Remember the 2006 game LSU played at Knoxville?..He pressured JaMarcus Russell the whole game and with less than 2 minutes left he goes into the prevent and has Ryan Karl on Early Doucet...That is the thing about Chavis. I can never remember his defense coming up with THE BIG STOP ( fumble, int, quarterback sack) when the game was on the line..NEVER..

He walks into a GOLD MINE at Baton Rouge..Talent at every position, whether it was Fulmer's doing or not it will tell the tale at LSU ..No reason to cry because the Tigers are loaded...We will see

My feelings exactly. I don't think Chavis is the second coming. I was right there with everyone laughing at Tennessee's lack of adjustments in the 2001 SECCG.

But I do think he's comparable to Pellini and Pellini won a title with the total package we had that year. Chavis could do the same if all factors come together again.

Chavis may not be the second coming of Jerry Glanville. But, who should we have hired? Who was available that is better?

Nobody that wouldn't eventually leave for a head coaching job.

My ideal candidate would be a young coach who would eventually leave for a head coaching position. But, I don't know of that many out there like that.

Who is better that would eventually leave for a head coaching position?

I was referring to the rumors that Les had courted both Will Muschamp prior to Pelini leaving and DeWayne Walker of UCLA after wards.

Both coaches would go on to accept head coaching jobs, in Muschamp's case the "head coach-in-waiting" at Texas. While Walker would take over at New Mexico State.

Muschamp

Walker

Edit: Not saying i think either of those coaches are necessarily better, or a better fit at LSU, than Chavis. In fact, I don't, on either accord.

WTF?! An honest and accurate assessment. I would add that Brick and/or Cooper may have their boys playing up to 2003 standards from time to time. If they do it consistently, look for them to get head coaching/DC positions elsewhere. Particularly Cooper.

Florida's offense is going to score against everyone. Last year, they averaged 43.3 ppg against SEC opponents. Their 2009 offense returns: Tebow, Cooper, Moody, Rainey, Demps, James, Hernandez and the Pouncey brothers among others. Holding this offense to under 30 points would be a victory in itself.

They got a fumble in that same game that didn't count due to a quick whistle.

The part about not getting a big stop is nonsense. I could pull games from the "down" period of '02-'08 and in that 7 year period could show you at least a dozen game saving "stops"

I could probably pull another handful like the 4th quarter of the Auburn game, where the defense held Auburn to FOUR drives of 4 plays or less only to have only to have the offense keep punting or fumbling.
