Chase Made the Right Call; Shelvin is Making a Mistake

Ultimately, everyone has to make a decision that they can live with. Shelvin ultimately has to do what is in his best interests and he is the one that has to live with it. But that being said, he's a quasi-public figure and news worthy so there is nothing wrong with raising an eyebrow around his decision to opt out, so long as done so without besmirching his character.
With that background, Chase's decision makes logical sense. By all indications, he is a top 5, top 10 at worst pick in the draft. He's a national champion, a Bilentnikoff winner, a Tiger legend. Playing is truly unlikely to increase his draft spot or his earnings.
With Shelvin, he is a national champion. But he is a projected third rounder. He isn't a third rounder because of his talent. It's because of his inconsistency. If he comes in and has a monster year, he could play his way into the "frick you money" of the first round.
Moreover, Tyler's biggest issue has been his ability to stay in shape. Now he is going to opt out. So instead of being answerable to Coach O and Bo Pelini, he will be answerable to a personal trainer who he is paying. That's an obvious concern and a risk.
Lastly, we have been able to differentiate Chase from Dylan Moses, Devonta Smith, Alex Leatherwood, etc. because he is much more of a sure thing. But all of those guys are surer things and will be drafted ahead of Tyler Shelvin.
So, in short, love Tyler, but he is making an error here. He is going the path of Ed Alexander, Trev Faulk, Tharold Simon, Malachi Dupre, Sam Montgomery...
You hate to see it.

For the sake of the argument, what if Chase played this year and got seriously injured and falls in the draft?
Was it still the right move to play at the cost of a few million dollars.

With Shelvin’s weight, I can understand his fear of Covid. He’s morbidly obese. He’s likely much safer with the team than the general public though.

As a competitor, I’m not sure how you sit out and watch your teammates play, particularly if you’re healthy. If chase is scared of injury ruining his draft position or covid, it’s unfortunate and it’s something I see becoming a trend for elite guys sitting out after sophomore year. Shelvin had everything to gain by playing this year and showing scouts he can keep his weight down. Being out of sight this year will cost him in the draft unless he has an incredible pro day.

So he should have declared for the draft after the 2019 season was complete? Should all players do the same who have big sophomore seasons?

You do realize that Chase could fall because other guys played and showed improvement? He won’t have game film for a year. It could turn around and bite him. The NFL is a “what have done lately” league. Opting out is a risk that could cost him substantial money.

For whatever reason this board still doesn’t understand NFL salary and bonus structures nor do they understand insurance policies. The money between an injury now and next season isn’t much difference, at least Shelvin has an actual health concern.

That's not what I'm saying, but everyone is approaching this like it's a binary good/bad decision.
There are circumstances for everything.
Did the timing suck? Yeah, but I guarantee you Chase would still be getting hate if opted out the day after we won the title.
There is never a good time to sell the fans on leaving when they know they can have the best player at his position in the game for another year.

I understand the frustration on timing, but there is no one on the team that looks at it the way you do. All of these guys came to LSU with dreams of the NFL, national titles and being recognized as the best at their position. Chase did the last two and he is a surefire lock for the first round. Was I excited to see he was willing to play another year? Sure. But from a "you have one life to live" argument, can I really quibble with him on anything but his timing? No.
Shelvin, there's lot's to quibble about...

Ok let’s say Waddle and Smith have monster seasons and Chase drops to the third WR taken in the 15-20 range in the first round. He just cost himself about $10MM in guaranteed money by opting out if we assume he’s a top 5 pick right now. You’re right, there are circumstances for everything. It is not set in stone that he’s the top WR taken in the 2021 draft. No one thought Ruggs would be the first this past year, yet he was.
