I don't get "hyped up for the season" in April.

rutiger and extremetigerfanatic in their responses have it correct. I didn't see why Texas or USC for example canceled theirs but the real clue is why Nebraska canceled theirs. Matt Ruhle says that their spring game has become little more than a combine for other teams to evaluate Nebraska's talent and steal some of their players in the portal open the next month. I have always thought the spring "game" was a complete joke that doesn't even adhere to normal game conditions. The QBs wear red jerseys, the clock runs all the time, etc. And if indeed this is letting out information on players to make them bigger portal targets, I say GOOD RIDDANCE to the spring game. Evaluate player depth during spring practices which are closed for the most part.

Easy, schedule your spring practices to where the spring game will fall after the transfer window closes.

They should just do away with Spring games and add a "PreSeason" game before the season starts that's like a scrimmage and against instate teams... Could be 2 quarters of football and then each team can elect to work on some things like goal line, 2 min drill, etc.

The Spring Game is entertaining for fans who can't or don't go to the games in the fall to see some football. I don't mind it being played. No one should take it as serious. Just some players who don't get playing time to play. The real point of spring practice is the scrimmages where they go 1s v 1s and 2s v 2s. Those scrimmages matter more than the game.

Don't agree with that at all. IMO the only legit reason for the spring game is for a player to find out where he is on the depth chart. If the transfer window closes BEFORE the spring games, and a player believes he needs to transfer, he can't do it. Not to mention my guess is there is an academic reason why the spring games are held when they are. I know "academic" is an archaic term nowadays.

Coaches don’t have to tell players in the spring exactly where they fit on the depth chart. Coaches can say there is a competition.

If you put 1s on the field in a spring game you essentially let the 2s or 3s know where they stand and it may motivate them to look around in the portal, especially if they get some good tape as a 2 or 3 in the spring game

If they would ever split the teams up and make it more competitive then I think there is some value.

Very little value in how they have been doing it. It's not even a spring game anymore IMO.

Yeah, I'm not the biggest Matt Ruhle fan but he is 100% correct. And he apparently has the transfer portal numbers after the spring game to back up his claim that teams are really poaching his players after scouting the spring game. And I agree that the spring game and even practices gives you the depth chart, so that makes some players really susceptible to a paycheck from elsewhere.

Play it on a Satruday night and treat it like a gameday.

6:30 pm kickoff
Campus open for FREE tailgating
Turn the 101 lot on the west side into a fanzone with games and a bunch of food trucks
Full band running down hill

If there's a home baseball game that afternoon, even better.

I don't care if its televised or not. They'll be enough media there to get us highlights and stats.

Why not scrimmage a D I AA power, lower tier D I school ? Seems to me that you could get a team from the northern part of the country to come down. Pay them 500k-750k. Let them get some warm weather practice time , plus a scrimmage. Probably make a decent gate off of the scrimmage.

Not really helpful to cancel. Our offense isn't very creative or complex, it's just built on executing the same players over and over with better talent.

2019 had a spring game and showed no signs of being affected.

100% agree with cancellations

It only serves to give these prima donnas another reason to hit the NIL market. They see where they are on the depth chart, OR another team gets to see someone shine in an area of their weakness. So the opposition 'gets the word out' that they have a job waiting, and BOOM, they gone

Now this is something I think the fan base could really get behind.
