They bulked him up way to much and resulted in him not being as quick IMO.

Look at his size difference between his freshman year then sophomore and especially junior year. Between injuries and the added bulk he lost a step.

Unfortunately Perkins turned out to be a situational pass rusher and not an every down player

Perkins spent a majority of time his freshman year lining up at LOS and rushing passer or spying QB. He was great at that

We did that a lot less to get him into an "NFL" position for him the last 2 years, he was just an above average player when playing a more traditional LB or S type role because it minimized his best aspect - spying QB close to LOS or rushing passer.

Basically he knows he wasnt going to be drafted as a 6'1 220lb DE to the NFL so they tried to play him as a LB/S because thats what his body type dictates.

If he was 6'4 250 he would have been a 1st round pick and stayed at DE.

I’m sure there’s logical explanations but I am still perplexed by Perkins massive impact his freshman year and never returning to that type of big play ability?

Injury, ACL tear junior year 3rd season
Freshman year and Sophomore years were similar stat wise
Obviously ACL tear limited him to playing in 4 games junior season

Senior year was off and not all recoveries happen quick and some never recover.

Somehow fans assume that all ACL tears and other injuries are the same with athletes fully recovering the same.

This board creates infatuations with certain players and they only watch the "highlights" instead the rest of their body of work.

Perkins wasnt even 50% as good as this board thought he was. He is very weak, can not break first contact and only has one skill set. Speed. And in high-school you can play see ball, get ball, but not in the SEC. He was lost anytime he coulsnt blitz or spy. He took awful angles in pursuit and gave up on plays especially late season.

This board watched 5 plays his freshman year and then disregarded every other body or work. Wanna know who Perkins is? Go rewatch Nicholls in 24. Watch him get bullied by D2 tackles and TEs the entire time, and watch him get so frustrated he throws a punch. BTW, we pulled Perkins for 2 drives and put Whit in. We stopped Nicholls on both drives 3-0. We put Perkins back in and they scored.

A tweener who could rush the passer from obscure angles. Once he was identified as a pass rusher he couldn’t beat any block to save his life.

Them playing two different positions has nothing to do with the fact that Perkins is bigger, faster, and stronger in every metric but still can’t get off a block or get past guys like Mathieu could. IQ and heart are a big factor in sports.

IDC what anyone says. His effort was at an all time low last season. It was sad how many plays he took off.

100%. A&M first touchdown or not run by their qb he quit chasing when he 100% could’ve run him down when he cut back as an example

He was an unknown his freshmen year. It's as simple as that. Folks didn't gameplay specifically around him yet.

1. Terrible usage. He was a great pass rusher early, and by the time he left he was basically a box safety

2022: 31% pass rush 25% coverage
2023: injured
2024: 20% pass rush 38% coverage
2025: 11% pass rush 48% coverage

2. Lack of talent around him. Rather than focus on rushing the passer, he was forced into other roles since he was the most versatile player on the defense. He sacrificed what he was best at

The issue with Perkins was the rant watchrd him play against Arkansas his freshman year and then expected that kind of game every single game.
I agree. I remember CBK tried to chill the fan base out about Perkins saying "listen Perk is a great player but he's not doing it alone. The DL is pressuring the QB and he's running him down.

This is the same thing we saw with D. Guice. Incredible as a spell back, not great as bellcow, due to their flashy, sack out style.

OK, this is just dumb. Guice was definitely capable of being a bell cow back and demonstrated it. In 2016 he led the team in carries, yards, and ypa (183/1387/7.6). Same in 2017 (237/1251/5.3). And both years were with what we consider mediocre at best QB play and a completely transparent offensive scheme. Injuries plagued him during his short NFL stint with the Redskins so he sat out all of 2018 after tearing his ACL and then despite tearing his meniscus in the season opener of 2018, he was sitting at 42/245/5.8 after playing in 5 games through week 13. Then he tore his MCL the following week and we know about the legal issues that followed leading to his release from the team.

I’ve never torn an acl but imagine some had to do with trusting the injured leg like before.

Teams learned how to scheme away from him. He never progressed as an every down LB

Freshman year - See ball, get ball

Remaining years - learn a position and learn how to read offenses

Well at some point you have to think to know where to go.

Coaching staff & Perkins camp saw what Micah Parsons was about to get and were determined to make him into that.

But they didn't do that lol. They did the opposite of that, which wasn't necessarily wrong.

He should've been in the Star position as a roving LB/S Hybrid with the occasional hand in the ground edge rusher. He was never a primary EDGE, nor was he a primary MIKE like they tried to make him.

He was also very athletic, but not very instinctive, which is why he was out of position so often.

A bunch of things struck me about him over the 3-4 years he was here.
1) Very skilled player when matched up in space against a single defender and once people knew he was something to focus on, he was simply neutralized by most teams sophomore year on when he was on the field and not hurt.
2) Takes plays off and seems lazy.
3) Tweener, not really great at any one position.
4) Also seems fairly low IQ, I’ll get downvotes for this, but intelligence plays a major part in dissecting defenses quickly enough to make plays with God Given talent or not.

I may be wrong and could care less either way, because I’m just glad he is finally gone.
I see him in the league for maybe 3-4 years but that’s about it based on my assessment above.

What? Guice was an all conference "bell cow" with average RB behind him. The best games of his career came without Fournette on the field, outside of the Arkansas game.

It's also dumb to even compare the two players given their positions.
