Can someone who understands ball better than me explain Perkins shift from Freshman yr on?

I’m sure there’s logical explanations but I am still perplexed by Perkins massive impact his freshman year and never returning to that type of big play ability?
Was it all about teams just learning to scheme around him?

Moving him inside was a massive misstep

Tried to move him to a different position. Didn't work out well. Got hurt. Takes time to recover fully. Had an impact the 2nd half of last season.

Perkins was a really good LB for LSU. The issue with Perkins was the rant watched him play against Arkansas his freshman year and then expected that kind of game every single game. That was never realistic at all. It wasn't necessarily as much of a Perkins sucks problem as it was a rant group think problem.

He was an athletic freak his freshman year and teams weren't prepared for him as a pass rushing game wrecker. He lost some of that athleticism after the injury and lacked the instinctiveness to play another position. Despite all the traits he was still behind plays and caught up in traffic because he isn't a linebacker.

Coaching staff & Perkins camp saw what Micah Parsons was about to get and were determined to make him into that.

I think the move inside had more to do with it than anything else. It got him hurt bc he was too small, and negated his speed, which was his greatest asset.

If I’m being honest, he probably should’ve dropped weight and tried to become more of a true safety early on. Didn’t have the instincts for Linebacker, he was solid in coverage

This is the dumbest thing I’ve read today. Only because I haven’t come across Semjase yet.
FWIW That game was mid-November. He had already had a brilliant season as a freshman.

It’s OJsAfterLifeCoach. Coaches him through a medium.

IDC what anyone says. His effort was at an all time low last season. It was sad how many plays he took off. But keep talking about scheme.

at the end of the day Perkins could feast at DE in college but had no chance to play that position in the NFL
unfortunately he never got comfortable at LB and the injury hurt as well
kind of reminds me of Marcel Brooks from the 2019 team, all the talent in the world but no defined position

Freshman year he was really only a pass rush specialist who came off the bench on passing downs and feasted on bad line play
5.5 of his (only) 7.5 freshman sacks came against Arkansas, State, and Purdue
Then offenses figured out what Kelly and staff knew all along that prompted moving him around - if you get a hand on him when rushing he’s cooked. He is not overpowering or getting around anyone. Then we learned he can’t really cover either, which was tremendously disappointing given his athleticism. And then obviously the low effort has been visible throughout
Ultimately the freshman year was a mirage

His freshman year, offenses tried to run away from him. He was too fast and athletic.
Next years, they decided to run AT him. He was too small and couldn't get off blocks, so that worked.
Even when LSU used him to rush from the edge on 3rd downs, the Left tackle would use his speed against him and just push him out allowing the QB to step up and run or give him plenty of time to find someone open.

The rumors were that he/his family wanted to move inside because of nfl money projections. Whether that is true or not idk.
But when it was apparent his speed was negated and he didn’t have the size/strength to shed blockers inside, he should have been moved outside again.
I still believe he should’ve been a SS for us in the mold of a Jamal Adams.
People tried to say he was a liability in coverage but he consistently graded high in coverage metrics per PFF.
The injury as stated above drug out the perception of underperforming, but he made a lot of big plays. He would 100% still be starting for us this year had he stayed.

Athletic freak. Too small to play inside. Would also get lost in coverage assignments. It’s easy to scheme against someone when all they can do is bend an edge and rush the QB. He still made many impactful plays his entire career but the Arky game set expectations too high.

2025 where he had three interceptions, multiple sacks, and a forced fumble. He was objectively better the latter half of 2025.

He was always undersized and a tweener with no true position. He never got past that so it wasn't hard to scheme around his athleticism. Doesn't matter if you can't shed blocks and you don't have the ability to cover like a DB so where are you at? Moving him inside was really dumb. Another BK special from Big Brain.
