They were right next to the access door to the garage. Just because the officer may have subjectively believed they might be hiding doesn’t mean they were actually hiding. They could have stopped in place when the heard the siren bleep. But I don’t think the video establishes it one way or the other.

How often are cops killed on traffic stops or domestic calls? They don't arrive with guns drawn, but if they perceive suspicious or erratic behavior then will perceive an escalation and respond in a more aggressive manner. If you're stopped, comply first and complain later if you think the cop was out of line. Safest way for everyone to go home alive and unharmed.

If you were walking somewhere at night with your family and saw two guys hiding behind a car, would you think nothing of it? Or would you suspect it may be unsafe for you and your family and you need to get away from there? It’s okay for a regular citizen to be suspicious or even fear something may be up, but they police shouldn’t be able to be suspicious of that and investigate it? Why not?
