Meaning he's made bad hires at nearly every position on the staff. What exactly is telling you it will get better?

You refuse to look at the roster.

I understand that fans think the sky is falling, but Kelly had an off the wall 4-8 year at ND and then went 54-9 with 3 playoff appearances over the next 5 seasons.
That doesn't excuse this season or the 4-8 season, just adds some perspective.

Before the season, we knew there were huge holes in the team. Lack of depth on the defense esp in the backfield and line. Then we lost our best run stopper and Perkins. On offense, we have 2 running backs, one a true freshman sho has an injured foot. Our receivers have been inconsistent and the offensive line has disappointed. We are way short on depth. I’m disappointed in the season but I think we are heading in the right direction, just slowly.

That's Kelly's problem. He thinks it is like the "old times" where teams are built only by high school recruiting.
He doesn't know how or want to build a team by both - recruiting high school and Portal additions.
And now with NIL ruining both, he is pretty much scratching his head.
You've got to understand, when all of us reach a certain age, we WILL NOT Change. He's still coaching in the 90's, 00's, and 10's. He will always believe his system will work.
That's why Saban left Alabama. He knew his system wouldn't work anymore and wouldn't change or didn't know how to change.
He doesn't know how or want to build a team by both - recruiting high school and Portal additions.

So he is in year 3 of a full class he is responsible for recruiting.
I give him a pass on the hiring year, 3 weeks is not enough time to get a class signed evaluate coaches etc.

And all have been a bust under Kelly - except J. Daniels (and we lucked out with him)
Anderson, Alexander, Lacy have been OK, but OK players don't win in the SEC.
He doesn't want to pay for really good portal players because it might cause locker room problems, so he loses with OK portal players instead.

You aren't getting elite SEC starters in the portal, in general.
The portal is mostly players who got buried on the depth chart at their current school, are small school guys taking a step up, or guys who were problems.
Thus, they're a huge gamble and the vast majority are just going to be "okay."

Well, if we don't get "elite" portal players this round, we are in trouble next year - especially with the OL and WR positions.
I was hoping next year we could get to 7 - 5 and then our big recruiting class will kick in, but now that Underwood isn't going to be here, we have to hit 4 or 5 homeruns in the portal.
