Updated post on 5/19, thru the Georgia game
Skenes is currently sitting at 164 strikeouts and 17.03 strikeouts per 9 innings.
If LSU makes it to Omaha he will have another 4 starts. If he averages 9.75 strikeouts per game in those 4 starts, he will end up with 203 strikeouts for the season, breaking Ben McDonald’s 1989 SEC record. By the way, Ben pitched 152.1 innings that year (Skenes has pitched 86.2 so far this year). Obviously, if Skenes averages below 9.75 strikeouts per game, he would need a second appearance in Omaha to break the record.
The record for strikeouts per 9 innings (not just SEC, but overall record) is 16.8. Skenes is currently averaging 6 innings per start. If he continues to pitch 6 innings, he would have to avg 10.6 strikeouts per game to break the record. Lately he has been pitching 7 innings. If this continues, he would have to avg 12.9 strikeouts per game to break the record. Just for reference, in 1989 Ben’s strikeouts per 9 innings avg was 11.9.
The national strikeout record in a season nationally is 234. It would be an incredible feat to accomplish this. He would have to avg striking out 17.75 per game for 4 games to accomplish this.
Here are his season stats thru the Georgia game.
Here's to LSU winning it all and Skenes breaking both the SEC season strikeout record AND the national strikouts per 9 innings record.

If he goes deeper into games as the season winds down and post season starts he will absolutely break the record.

Breaking down Skenes' strikeout numbers
And who downvotes this post??
I did not downvote this OP however why chase a record that was from a different era and a totally a different conference. If chasing this record put Skenes in a possible overuse injury, then not worth the chase.
Best to leave pitchers alone and not put crap in their heads.

As much as I love him striking out batters, part of me wishes he would pitch to contact just a little bit more so he could keep his pitch count down some.

How many pitches per appearance does he average and what is the Div 1 average?

I don’t know how a guy that throws 100 can pitch to contact lol

The point is, the dude has been so damn dominant, that these are the results and if he keeps it up, these are the records he could possibly break.

Missing a key number. How many innings per game going forward to do this? Math posts need sound math.

With the easier portion of our SEC schedule in front of us I expect PSs numbers to improve.

I think he has a legitimate chance of getting close if things continue to go the Tigers way overall. My biggest concern is the quality of the behind the dish umpiring he has been having to deal with. We have seen the zone squeezed so much during his starts, it has been difficult to get a strike without throwing the ball straight down main street. This, and his ability to fool even the ump with the movement of his pitches would make even being close to the K record a stunning accomplishment.
