Firstly, their styles are much different. This is a much more up field attacking defense.

2019 was solid at keeping points off the board, and they knew they had burrow to score 50.

Not really a fair comparison.

This defense feels like 2010-11 Chavis style.

Can you allow for a season to be played before such a silly comparison. Some of you people.

Vandy, Ole Miss, Bama, and others were going through the 2019 defense like a hot knife through butter. Then, everybody got healthy and we shut down A&M, Georgia, OU, and Clemson.

However, no one could stop the offense and we were winning by two scores most games. I think Bama got to a one score game late.

Let’s see how this D holds up. I believe Kelly already showed he believes they can win games for us. Don’t let the offense give away games.

2019 had 9 players from that defense who were ultimately drafted, so that will be hard to beat.

not really that hard, unless you only go by players drafted.

I think the Oregon game was better. Their offense was really good that year. They scored 27 but 2 of those tds were garbage time when the ga,e was well out of hand. We only allowed 95 yds rushing. We held the, to their lowest offense I’ve output of the 2011 season.

Oregon was far better offensively that season. That 2011 was absolutely loaded with NFL players.

The 2019 defense had a lot of good players, but as a unit they were nothing special. Teams moved to the ball and scored at will on them. Sure, they made some plays here and there as a good players will but 2019 was not even a very good defensive unit

2025 looks to be special. One game is not enough to judge, but it looks good so far!

Some don’t remember that the 19 D took a while to come around.

Texas and Vandy put up 38.

Look at TOP, look at the last 5 games of the season when they started getting players back. They played to the flow of the offense until it counted. Look from TAMU on especially when Divinity and a couple other players got back. For all intent and purposes, they clamped down when they needed to.
Here’s what they gave up:
7 to TAMU -that was revenge for the cups game
10 to UGA - just killed them
14 to OU in that first half (49-14 at the half)
25 to Clemson and the number 1 player taken in the 2021 draft who already had title, Tee Higgins, Etienne - 8 points total the for nearly 3 quarters. I’m convinced had they not been stealing signs, LSU would have beaten them worst than they did and still should have dropped 56 on them with the dropped TD and kneeling at the end.
That OU team was killing people with that offense.

PFF said that LSU had their best PFF defensive rating ever vs. Clemson Saturday night. That includes games vs. cupcakes and FCS schools.

How can we answer this in 1 game? lol.

That 2019 defense may have no looked amazing stats wise but it actually was a REALLY good defense. Nobody could move the ball on that defense if you asked them to get the offense a stop. Prime example: Auburn game and when they were behind in Clemson. That defense is actually underrated. Teams put up numbers on them because they were mostly play soft in games when it started to get out of hand. Defense gave the offense opportunities to get out of hand and if any game was close, they stonewalled teams. Really underrated defense.

Well in their first big road test the 2025 defense punked Clemson and the 2019 defense let Texas score every single possession in the 2nd half. The last four games make people forget how bad the 2019 defense was at times.

But the 2019 defense doesn't get their due.

Thrilled from what I saw from our Defense game 1. And to Chicken's point we all need a better sample size but lawd I'm feeling good about it at the moment...

Here's the thing though... comparison's to previous years is not really fair due to nil... which is what the defense is at the moment... A by product of good recruiting and NIL...

While I agree with you, 2019 was not a world beater Defense. They were 33 in total defense.

At several times further season in 19, we wanted Aranda fired.

Defense definitely looked much better Saturday than it has in years but it’s just game 1

So far this. Small sample size, but aside from Auburn there was never really a clamp them down defensive game, it was more of an outscore and force opponents out of their comfort zone to keep pace.

Haha, we are one game in. Let’s see the season play out. I know that the 2019 defense did it when it mattered. Let’s see if these guys do. Looks promising.
