which 4 teams? What if there are 2 undefeated teams and all other major teams have 2 losses?
I just think that it is too subjective. There are some years where this may work, but there are others where it would not.
I think there is a huge gray area with a 4 team playoff.

11 conference champs, 1 at-large ... there you go.

conference champion tie-ins solve NOTHING

Top 4 in the BCS standings. This way all regular season games are still extremely important. Play the Orange, Fiesta, Rose, and Sugar on New Year's, then the next week have one of the four host two semifinal games, and then the next week have one of the four host the championship. They could have a similar rotation to what they have now.
So now, 4 teams would be unable to be chosen for BCS bowls instead of 2. At the end of the day, the Rose Bowl can still pick a Pac-10 team and Big Ten team because it is unlikely either conference will put two teams in the top 4.
The only major thing is that the semifinals and finals would have to be played in the middle of the week like the championship is now in order to stay out of competition with the NFL playoffs.

every conference needs to make equal standards as far as their format. 8 conference games and a conference championship.

Exactly, so if they absolutely feel the need to have a playoff, it should not be more than 4 teams.

i agree that the BCS works. However, we have been talking about for some time. It seems bound to happen.

Take the top 4 teams in the BCS. The reason for a 4 team playoff is to increase the likelihood that you have the top 2 teams, not to match up the "true" top 4 teams. If a team can't convince the voters or earn enough of a computer ranking to be in the top 4, then it is very unlikely it is in the top 2 and I don't care if they are excluded. Determining the "true" top 4 is actually a more difficult problem than determining the top 2 and determining the top 12 is even more difficult. The fallicy is thinking that subjectivity can be eliminated in college football. There is just too much disparity between teams and schedules. Subjectivity is an inherent characteristic that cannot be assumed away.

And who has the authority to do that?

we're not talking about the top 12. the 12 will be comprised of all conference champs and an at large.
the top 2 and 4 are subjective.

It's a short list.
Hawaii, Auburn, Boise, and Utah.

I think you need to add an extra Utah in there ... and Tulane as well.

The top two is always subjective in a way. But a #3 team left out of a two team playoff has more beef than a #5 team left out of a four team playoff.

True, forgot Tulane. The 2nd Utah was the 04 season with Auburn.
Still a short list for a "flawed" system.
